there was little scheming to what vt did to us in the second half. they understood that they were way better up front than us and no matter what formaiton we lined up in, they could just run straight at us. it was late in the third quarter before vt had even thrown their second pass of the half. better players make coaches seem better to fans that don't understand the game of football. it is easier to blame the coach than to try and understand what it takes to play this game. you can't coach getting dominated man on man like we did yesterday. they were athletically superior to us on every level. it is common sense that when your team sends a blitz, don't get beat inside (hence those great slant passes you referred to). the priority for our d end is to not lose contain on the qb yet we caved inside all night. if an offense does not use misdirection on their running plays and instead just runs a straight give, penetration from the line is key to stopping the play dead in its tracks. we were pushed off the line all night instead. these are all things that are common knowledge to all players and coaches. our inability to do these things does not point to a lack of coaching but rather a lack of talent.

I like some strides the coaching staff accomplished this year and finishing 2nd SEC East was testament to that. However, the talk being Monte having 1 month to prepare etc etc and the way our D was manhandled a la Ole Miss is letting doubt creep into my mind as to whether this is going to work.

VT had the same 1 month preparation period. Every defense has a weakness, and when said defense lacks talent and depth at multiple positions, can be easily exploited by a team with the offensive talent of VT.

As soon as he has the kids to execute his plan he (Monte) will be just fine. My goodness people chill out on this crap.

Our plan on Defense sucked last night. That would be Monte, correct??

Incorrect !!!

The plan was good . The execution was good for the most part . Team depth was the issue ...and Va Tech Knew it . At the half it was 14-17. the defense had done pretty well until that point. The line was holding their own in the matchups ...allowing the LBS to make plays. After the half ..Tech line up in a basis Zone read and pushed the vols D line ...off the ball . Why would they wait till after the half to do this ????

UT has no depth . In The Chief heyday ...he would play as many as 10 + D linemen a game. Legs always fresh . Alot less injuries . Tired guys get injured. I think the Vols have 5 or 6 guys they play now . Tech knew this and when the time was right , went after the weekness.

Monte has masked alot of weaknesses with this D all season ...but sometimes the mask will slip off. We could get 11 guys together and take the most perfect game plan into an exibition game with The Colts . If we can't win our individual assignements because of fatigue , lack of talent , or injury ...that perfect game plan won't do us one ounce of good .

VT's OC just flat handed it to Monte tonight. Not sure I've seen that before other than possibly the Ole Miss game. It's like he knew exactly what play to call at the right time. Those slants over the middle were seemingly called right at the perfect time each and every time. Also, looked to me like Berry was already thinking NFL before this game. That was one of the worst games of his entire career.

Our D-line got physically dominated and our depleted LB corps was just too slow. Not much Monte can do about that.

I would have love to have seen the healthy Vols team that squared off against UGA and USC this season in the game. We may have still lost, but it would have been a blast to watch.

Don't let facts and common sense get in the way of the idiocy of the mouthbreathers.

Monte was great in his day, but even the great coaches start to go down hill at age 70. I would like to see more of a Will Muschamp type coordinator brought in.

Thank God you aren't making those decisions.

Two head coaches in their eighties won bowl games today.

Bowden also lost 6 regular season games. The last 10 years have been average for Florida State. If you want to be successful in the SEC nowdays you have to have a coach that has the stamina to work 75 hours a week. No coach NFL or college as won a championship past age 69.

If Monte had their talent and they had our talent (or lack of talent or depth) It would be a different game!

Good question. What ever it was it sucked! They ran to the same side all night. How hard is that to figure out?

Defensive coordinators can't do everything. I'm sure Monte had a very good idea what play was coming up next. Nebraska would run the same freaking play 6 times in a row and gain 9 yards every time.

Have you seen VT's previous recruiting classes? When we get the guys in here that CMK needs to run his system we better be deadly. 1 million dollars deadly.

Keep in mind that Monte's defense held AL to No touchdowns ...and held FL to one of their lowest outputs all season . Auburn had 84 offensive snaps but scored little more than 20 points .

So is it Monte's fault the Ole Miss and Va Tech beat us so bad ?

UT has no depth ...and they are short on talent all over the place . Good schemes are helpful to say the least ...but if players cannot win their individual matchups , schemes matter not . There is no coordinator or coach that can help them with that .

Did Spurrier just leave the Fun and Gun in his desk at Florida ?? No ...he went from a position with superior talent to a place with average talent .

In any case ...recruiting is the key . When the horses arrive ...Monte's D will be an immovable object ...assuming he coaches a couple of more years .

In this case superior schemes really helped this team ...from a talent point of view it is the same 5 win team it was last season . You should be happy that the ol' man schemed us out of a couple bad tail whoopins. To expand on this ...UT is currently down 23 scholerships. It will take awhile to catch of from that deficit ...2-3 years . Thank Fulfer and his ilk for this .
