Still too many unknowns to give up on next year

What guarantee was there in 2011-2012? None, zero. Golden and Maymon jumped up in points because they jumped up in minutes. Same could happen next year.

If you don't want to be objective, you surely don't have to. Pops, Davis and Reese are the current centers and pf's on the team.

You will see U.T. run a more traditional motion offense next season. I liked what U.T. did with the 3 out 2 in post offense with Stokes and Maymon, but that's not what Martin traditionally runs. Look for a rebounding 5 and a stretch 4. He's going to try and open up the lane and have guys like Richardson, Hubbs, Moore, and Thompson attack the rim with and without the ball.

He's pretty much has this team built up to have a defensive/rebounding 5 and athletic, stretch 4s. I hope the tempo speeds up as well. We have athletes and I think we could run.

which post players on this team are good defensively?

I was more so saying that he isn't planning on having a dominant back to the basket scorer at the 5 and that the 5 position is going to be more so a defensive/rebounding slot at this time. My hope is that Turman and Pops can legitimately guard other bigs and grab rebounds. No crystal ball here. I really have no idea how good defensively they will be at this level or getting quality minutes. I do know Turman has a more polished defensive than offensive game.

The problem with most post-season predictions--whether by pessimists or optimists--is straight-line reasoning.

"Stokes & Maymon are gone, so the only big man options we have now are..."

The truth is Stokes departure (and best of luck, young man) creates a chain reaction of new possible events, opens new recruiting windows, presents new options for the coaches--maybe even some offensive basketball! (Okay, that one's hyperbole, just to make the point.)

As others have said, CCM did not arrive here with the intention of running a "Twin Bulkheads" offense. That was an adaptation to the talent we had. Remember how we even came to have Maymon? Who predicted that, or the kind of player he quickly became for us?

The absence of Stokes not only changes the roster, it changes all the dynamics of recruiting. It changes who is interested in Tennessee as much as it changes who we are.

So why not relax and enjoy watching this play out? After all, that's one of the joys of sports: we're all watching a movie being scripted and performed in real time. Sometimes it plays out nearly as expected, but usually there's at least 1 or 2 surprises that no one could have predicted. And sometimes it's so crazy-good no one would have dared written it.

Anyone giving up on next year before a game has been played is as big of an idiot as the knuckle draggers that ruined the season for the rest of us this year. Losing mentality from the fanbase doesn't help out any of our athletic programs. Do those of us who enjoy sports a favor, find a new hobby and take your hipster arses away from the Tennessee program and go be 'ironic' somewhere else.

Pops has shown nothing on D or O. it's all on the newcomers.

go start a message board with only positive posts and see how much that helps the team.

i'm curious to see how that works out for you.

May I ask who was giving up on next year? I sure wasn't.

Why does this need to be a thread? We just went to the Sweet Sixteen.

Grow a serious backbone......how can anyones opinion on a message board effect your enjoyment of the season....you must really struggle at life if u cant handle message board opinions.

Pops never has been billed as a player who would start. His role is to give five minutes here and there when the starting big runs into problems.

So why is he our starting center next year? Stokes leaving was a shock?

He may be, but I think there will be several lineups for a while to see what works best. I don't know if Pops or Turman will be our starting post. If we have guys like Cofer, Davis or Reese at the 5 then I think we could see quick doubles on the post. It'd be tough for the lightweights to handle true bigs.

Maybe CCM takes a page from the Gators defeensive scheme. I remember Stokes saying the doubles were very tough for him. Scheme will be of utter importance next season.
