I agree, but I don't think you can discount the opportunity to sell recruits to join the #1 class in the nation. For some, it may not matter and for others it might. I think it helps UT from a perception point of view in the media at least.
Better than being 40th like we were last year. And even or those who deny the value of recruiting rankings, it always feels good to see UT at the top.
Hit the nail on the head man! My buddy from Florida (not a UF fan) has been in Knoxville five years and was saying that last years UF game was the first time this has felt like a college town since he's lived here. And it's true. When UT is winning Knoxville stays abuzz. Business is better, it's just a better place to be. Having the #1 ranked class in June shouldn't be overlooked, even though it might not stick. Even as good as Fulmer was in closing, he usually closed late and shocked the world every year. What Butch is doing is unparalleled for a program that's been in this much turmoil. Even Saban had his first season to get some wins before raking in the number 1 class. Two VERY important things Butch has done:
1) United the fan base- no matter how you felt about Fulmer's firing, Kiffin/Dooley, etc...I'm hard pressed to find anyone who's not fired up about Butch. He's even got the respect of rival fans that I've encountered. The same fans who begged us to keep Fulmer and Dooley.
2) He's brought life back to this town- the first couple years of this stretch wasn't as bad because Bruce Pearl gave us something to believe in. Then he decided to grill some wieners and the rest is history. Knoxville has been like the after party to a funeral (if that makes sense) as of late. I remember when Neyland ROCKED, I don't care if UAB or Duke was in town. That's what happens when you have pent up energy all week surrounding the program. That's coming back. The energy is back.
With that being said...if one looks hard enough, you'll still find some who's eggs weren't cooked right, just looking to down anything.
Good post.
HA! Nice try. I actually have an anti-Rick Roll plugin that I use;

We have the most commits in the nation. This means absolutely nothing. The only column that matters at this early stage is the average rating of our commits, which we fall behind a bunch of schools on.
We will probably wind up with a top 10 class, which is outstanding. I'm not trying to belittle what Butch has done at all. But there is almost no chance we wind up with the #1 class when all is said and done unless we land 2 or 3 5* recruits before it's all over.
Inb4 "negavol"
there are 18 5 stars so far - there were 33 last year
there are 319 4 stars so far - there were 332 last year
so there are about 28 kids that are currently 3 star or below who will get the bump to 4 stars
a 5.7 3 star is the highest rated 3 star so those would seem to be most likely to get bumped - there are 235 of those right now - so roughly 12% of those will get a bump
so unless our 5.7 3 stars are definitely better than other teams 5.7 3 stars or unranked 5.7 3 stars - we likely will get only 1 bump (i am counting a net bump, as in 1 4 star may drop and 2 5.7's may go up, but that is only 1 net)
