Cancer has always been around, but I just don't recall it being so rampant back in my day.... especially in young folks like it is today. But I am old and my mind...among other things...isn't what it used to be.
For good or bad, our grandparent might have died at 41 of a heart attack or car wreck (lack of the safety equipment in cars today)...... years ago they didn't give cancer a chance to catch them. As we find cures for cancer, thee next thing on the list will get us.....we're not meant to live forever in these bodies.

Funny looking at the crowd and how it is only partially Orange. A lot of my UT gear was either white or heather gray. There just weren't so many choices back in the day.
By 98, I remember the crowd being very Orange.
This reminds me of the days I would get UT clothing for Christmas from the Sears Catalog. They only had CFB clothing from about 20 schools. If you weren't a big ratings team, your gear wasn't there.

I read he had cancer.

Yeah, I think it was lung cancer.

Taneyhill was really cool. During the 1995 game, I was seated behind the South Carolina sideline. During the opening drive, South Carolina was moving the ball at will and two Gamecock defensive players were trash talking the section I was seated in. The drive bogged down inside the five yard line and the FG attempt was blocked by Leonard Little and run all the way back for a TD by Tyrone Hines. Tennessee fans roasted those same two Gamecock defenders mercilessly the whole rest of the game and they were so pissed. Later in the game, a fan several rows back called the name on the back of the jersey of some smallish Gamecock player, probably a walk-on. He turned around and a Tennessee fan waved a $5 bill at him and told him, "Hey, since you're not doin' anything anyway, how 'bout goin' to the concession stand and gettin' me two hotdogs?" That player was pissed too. Taneyhill was a lot different. When he'd be coming off the sideline, Tennessee fans were taunting him, saying things like, "You're the best player we have!" He was laughing like he was legit amused, and maybe he was. I really respected that and it was excellent role model conduct. I never forgot how he handled that. He was a class act.

Great post.
The good old days when a good player left it on the field. Social Media from players is one thing I purposefully shut out. He led an inferior team to victory in a real David vs Goliath game.
The USCe loss and the Memphis losses are the ones I still remember and still feel echoes of the let down.

I’m not sure how USCe views him but as an outsider, I would view him as a legend for them.
