Steve Spurrier: 'Tennessee Should Hire Tee Martin'

Nobody thought Tee could replace and surpass Manning. Tee has the "it" factor you should consider. He is a winner and winners win, it's what they do.

On a side note, let me just say that Tee being talked about as a head coach makes me feel really old

On another side note, I went to the Magic-Thunder game last night, and learned that Horace Grant's nephew plays for OKC...which made me feel really old.

Back on topic...UT could do much worse than hiring Tee Martin.

At this point in his life Spurrier has no ulterior motive, he just calls it like he sees it.

Uniting the fanbase and winning games are 2 different things there coach.

True. But Tee has a better shot at winning than Dave Doeren as well.

Zero sense to not call Tee Martin before you go to someone like Doeren.

That's who you go to if Tee turns you down. Not who you go to before Tee Martin.

Those around the USC program don't agree with your high praise for Tee as an offensive coordinator. Many reports I have seen rate at a very average OC....

a young inexperienced recruiter has not earned the right to enter the fray in the SEC.

Spurrier might rather his school face Tee than Kiffin

what you think?

“Young, inexperienced recruiter”?? Lol

USC's Martin is 247Sports Recruiter of the Year

I agree that Kiffin would win, but I think the narrative that Tee Martin wouldn't is false.

I agree with this.

I think if Tee was truly given whatever he wanted to build a staff, it would be pretty phenomenal.

If he could get Steele, or even Chavis (don't hate), as DC, that would be a good start.

I get that people want an all VFL staff. I think that shouldn't be common denominator in this.

The only "reach hire" I would want is Casey Clausen coming to Knoxville as QB Coach. Think he would be great there.

However, the only two staff hires that I truly care about with Tee are DC and S&C. I trust him to build out the rest.

Can’t believe I just liked one of your posts, but you’re 100% right. UT not calling Tee Martin is a slap in the face to not only Tee but the fanbase as well.

Umm? What is Tee's record as a head coach? Oh yeah, no experience. That's ok were in a great position to be the testing ground for him with all the success we've had recently. Lane Kiffin is the best available right now if those in charge are not going to make serious offers to some sitting head coaches. Les Miles and Kevin Sumlin both would be head and shoulders above Tee Martin. Tee has thumbed his nose at the Vols ever since he left. Why all the push to get him as a head coach. I would love to have him as OC but not head coach. Not Kevin Steele either. Steele is acceptable as DC not HC. The biggest positive I could see with Tee is that I believe he would recruit well. Yeah he's had decent success at USC but they are full of five star athletes and they compete in the PAC12 where they don't believe in defense. Hiring Tee Martin as head coach is at the very least risky.

Remind me again why we wouldn't consider Art Briles? Not suggesting him but I don't really know what he did.

Bring Tee home.

Currie and Co. are so clueless. Don't understand why they wont even talk to him.

I hope we don't hire Tee, he becomes coach of some middle of the road team, and then wins 20 National titles.

It's amazing how Steve Spurrier, a former coach and consultant for one of our most hated rivals, is actually doing a better job at our coaching search than our Athletic Director.

There's a certain level of insanity here. It's plainly obvious that Tee Martin is a much better choice than Dave Doeren or whatever puppet Currie and Haslam will trot out next. I'm not opposed to Kiffin or Leach either, but I realize Kiffin will have a hard time uniting the fan base. Tee Martin has been one of the best position coaches, offensive coordinators, and recruiters in the nation. How do you not hire him over these C- and D-list coaches we're looking at?

Normally, anything that 'ol Steve recommends regarding the Vols would be highly suspect, but this time I agree with the man.
