Steve Spurrier is retiring

The boys over on CockyTalk don't seem to upset by it all. Appreciative of what OBC has done but already talking replacements. Sound ready to move on.

Fuente and Jim Herman are two (2) names being thrown around a lot.

I bet they've had this in the works for some time. Probably have a very narrow list of coaches that will replace him already too.

This only reminds me that I am getting old, Spurrier has Always "Irked" me but I Love playing against him.. always have. Accept it or not this is the Pits, I will miss it.

People saying he's the best...no, Saban and Urban are better.

His last 4 classes @ USC: 20,24,24,13. Why the dumpster fire now? Maybe he just can't coach anymore.

College football is losing an all-time great.

I hated him for so long / I grew to like him and sure as hell respected him. He's the best coach Florida AND South Carolina have ever had. He's SEC through-and-through.

I think we literally would have applauded him in Neyland if he were coming back on an Exit Tour.

Legend. Enjoy retirement.

I hate to see him go and i hope it's not due to illness. The timing is suspicious.

Better than Saban? No. But he could definitely be 2nd or 3rd. Urban Meyer and Les Miles have also left legacies at UF and LSU. In terms of innovation and changing the game, he's definitely #1

Spurrier is absolutely a better X's and O's coach than Saban. Probably the best I've seen in my lifetime.

Sorry, OOC = out of curiosity, thought you were calling CSS a child, was just curious what you thought of the comparison to john mcenroe. Yeah sling blade aint my thang, but from my point a view, since you implicitly asked what i thought the point of the movie was, is that it was a mockery of religious exploitation and their well intentioned, "less than brilliant" good hearted followers. I havent seen it in awhile and mostly opined on post-viewing recollection but there you go

No. I was referring to the poster who called OBC (Ol Ball Coach) an A Hole. Nothing to say about McEnroe

RE: Slingblade: Doyle was satan incarnate and needed a killing. Karl was the Avenging Angel.

I was in the sixth grade in Elizabethton in 1966 when he won the heisman.I remember the whole school marching to the Bonnie Kate Theater and watching a movie in celebration of "Steve Spurrier Day".

Can you remember WJHL showing replays of Science Hill football and basketball when he ws playing?

He won 11 at South friggin Carolina. He coaches just fine.

During his years at Duke and Florida, I intensely disliked Spurrier. He whipped us badly on the field and in the media. Defeating him in his very last game in the swamp was as sweet as it will ever get for me. I still cherish that win more than any other in my memory, and it was at that moment I began to soften my views toward him. When he left the NFL to take the USCe position, I was surprised upon learning about it that I didn't curl up in the fetal position and groan in agony as I did when Saban returned to coach Bama. I actually found myself feeling glad he was returning. I had missed him. When I saw the SEC Storied biography on his career, things I never knew about him came to light. It made me have a full measure of respect for him. Now that he has retired, I know I will miss viewing the manifestations of his football genius as well as his folksy, down home wit. And hey, he is after all a native son of Tennessee. In that context, I have to say he did us proud. I wish him nothing but the very best as he enters this new phase of his life.
