Here's a look at three happy Vols after a 1964 victory, maybe the 16-14 win over Boston College, Frank Emanuel (50, left), Steve DeLong (65, center), and Joe Graham (72, right).

DeLong played for three head coaches at Oscar Smith High and three more at Tennessee. Despite the revolving door of instructors, he thrived at both schools. Quick and agile at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds, DeLong won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top lineman while at Tennessee in 1964. A middle guard on defense, DeLong was the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year from 1962-64 and was an All-American in 1963 and 1964. The Chargers and Bears selected him No. 6 overall in their leagues' respective drafts. DeLong signed with San Diego - as much for the climate as the money, he later would joke - and played seven years. He made the Pro Bowl in 1969 and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

Sorry to hear this and my thoughts go out to his family. DeLong was one of the first Vols I truly remember. It is ironic I was going through a media guide the other night and making little check marks by my favorite Vols over the years and sure enough he was one of my first. GO VOLS and I hope this years group have his heart and determination.

Bottom pic: ripped bloody jerseys, dirty pants, cuts taped. Those are real football players.

God bless you Steve DeLong, you were a great Volunteer. And Frank Emanuel is the reason I chose #50 as my number in high school.
