Steele about to raid UT's coffers for two weeks of 'work'

How the **** does Steele get a guaranteed two year contract during a hiring freeze, during an investigation? How does Fulmer get paid for two additional years. Why is the state AG not investigating UT??

I dont get why let him go...what benefit is that? If you have to pay him his full contract guatenteed, then try and see if he can work out first before letting him go. Its not like there are super high expectations this year. If Huepel is so great of an Offensive mind, then put Steele in charge of the defense and use him as a scapegoat in one or two years if it doesn't work out..

Geeze! We are a laughing stock....I swear if Huepel goes out and signs someone from UCF as DC, the fans should revolt
Offer Steele LB coach if they can pry Miss St DC ...if not make Steele DC ...dont send him packing. He is a good position coach too ...make it his choice if he wants to bolt ...not ours ...

With National Signing day approaching, would it not make better sense to hold on to Steele? He has connections to the SEC and from what I understand, pretty good recruiter. By holding on to him, that is one less position to hire. Besides, he was not part of the trouble. If we are going to have to pay, might as well get something in return.

Never again can anyone say the old tired line:

“Tennessee doesn’t have the money.”

Apparently, they have too damn much if they are this stupid with it. Unbelievable.

So much for these VFLs that so dearly love UT. No reservations about bleeding that true love for every cent they can squeeze out of it.

If he turns down the DC if offered he is owed $0. They can make him only the LB coach and if he turns that down he is owed $0.

The issues are does Heupel want him on his staff or does Steele want to be part of his staff. If the answer to either one of these questions is "no", then you release him and pay whatever the contract requires.

You all realize that this money in a round about way is going to Auburn. Steele in effect was working here for free. Auburn was paying Steele 2 million for being fired without cause with the understanding he would seek employment to offset that payment. When UT hired him, that reduced Auburn's payment by an equal amount so Steele was still getting a total of 2 million a year.
Before being hired by UT Steele waz.getting 2 million per year from Auburn.
After being hired by UT Auburn was then paying roughly 1.6 million and UT paid about .4 million to Steele. Still 2 million total.
After being fired by UT. UT is paying about .2 million and Auburn about 1.8 million to Steele. Still 2 million total.

Eh - personally I think Heupel should've kept Steele as the DC or a position coach at the least. Steele's experience in the SEC and recruiting the Southeast outside of Florida would have been beneficial IMO. Oh well, no one in the AD cares what I think.

I think that all depends on Steele’s expectations. Would he demand full control of the defensive staff and play calling?

There can be only one chief. You don’t want to undermine the HC which Steele apparently tried to do with Malzahn. This could really create a rift especially with Huepel’s offense. The Defense will be on the field, a lot.

I truly believe Fulmer had intentions of staying AD and setting Steele up as Interim HC, at least for a year. Ohio State made it work with Luke Fickell before they hired Urban Meyer and he probably thought it would work at UT. The carpet was just pulled out from under him so to speak.

Sure hope he stays for nothing more than sharing SEC experience of how BIG TIME football works. Especially Recruiting!

I think you are right or close to right. Knowing the turmoil associated with the firing was coming up, the uncertainty that we nave and are experiencing with finding coaches, I think the team, not just CPF, wanted a guy on hand to get us through the transition period, hold to to recruits and as many players as he has, and be part of the bridge between staffs. Worst case he was here to be an interim. I suspect all three of them at the point the decision was made expected CPF to still be here. In a matter of a few days, the UT will be better served with a new AD making the next hire decision was made. Getting a 2.5 mil coach for 450K was not that bad a deal. Would like to save the money and keep him, but if the new AD and HC think it is a bad plan and want to move forward without him but also without the money I am good with that too.

I know if he actually got paid by UT that AU was saved that amount, but don't have a clue if just signing a contract covered them. As a Vol if he just said no thanks and walked away or we did not retain him, maybe AU gets back on the hook for the money. He cannot get both. Anybody know how that would work for sure? He is probably in a position to decide who he wants the money from to a degree. Hope he is not paying attention to some social media folks. Might want to stick it to them. We always talk about free speech, but there is also free listen, followed by free react. He was willing to walk right in to a firestorm of undefined magnitude to help out and maybe get a shot to audition as a HC. No value add in vilifying him or the decision which also reflects poorly on him. Maybe we will get enough info as this unfolds to know if we could have avoided paying him if not on staff going forward.

Once the allegations were levied and rolled through the AD office, I really do believe Phil hired Steele to be interim HC knowing his hand was going to be forced to either suspend or fire Pruitt.

What he didn't account for was Plowman forcing his hand hard and giving him the 'step down gracefully or be embarrassed' line herself.
Once that happened, Phil knew he was done and we were locked in to paying Steele his money.
Also, in the grand scheme of cash being spent by UT in the last couple of weeks and the coming days, 900K is paltry.
