...and Consistent Improvement

When we played West Virginia on the 1st of September, we were flat out-classed. Our lads were far from mentally prepared for a football season. Tons of mental mistakes, which is a phrase normally used to mean dumb penalties, like false starts--but in our case this season has been even more about broken plays, missed duties, at least one person out of position or doing the wrong thing in just about every play. And if that weren't bad enough, the men in Orange also seemed to suffer a lack of confidence in themselves and each other.

A few weeks later, not much seemed to have improved as we battled Florida, despite two cupcake weeks to get things down. Really sloppy game with just as many mental mistakes--and this time, they tended to manifest themselves in turnovers. Killed any hope of showing improvement, all those turnovers.

Just one week after that, the improvement began to show versus Georgia. Still a loss, but our lads were usually all executing the same play, with far fewer mental letdowns. They looked like a team, rather than a collection of football players sharing a field. Progress.

And this week, against Auburn? Steady progress, again. You might be tempted to say, "no, DRAMATIC progress." Let's don't over-estimate it. The improvement was not dramatic. When you adjust for the relative qualities of UGa vs Auburn, that accounts for a lot of the flip in score. Nonetheless, steady progress. Our lads were (mostly) mentally dialed in today, the playbook memorized, understanding the schemes our OC and DC were pushing, showing they've started to figure out the keys to each of their roles.

And we will hopefully make more progress this coming week. Even if Bama lays a 30-point beat-down on us, the important thing is that we continue to improve, to grow.

All well-coached teams get better as the season progresses (offset by losses to injury). But teams with more room to grow, they can grow faster. They can play catch-up with the competition. That's what we're in the middle of doing. Playing catch-up.

And that offers hope for the back half of the season.

We're 3-3. We'll likely be 3-4 next Sunday. But that leaves five games, all of which are potentially winnable.

As long as we continue to make steady progress.

Go Vols!

Agree with your post. The improvement is evident. We arent where we want to be as a team but there is no denying this was the best coached Vol squad in a very long time.
No delusions of grandeur against Bama for me either. This is a team who, if they continue to improve, has a shot or better against everyone after Bama.

If CJP leads this team to 8 wins then he should be national coach of the year and get an immediate raise / contract extension.

I don't think many people here see 8 wins in our cards this regular season. The OP certainly didn't predict that.

I've been holding my water (and maybe my breath) to this point, but yeah. I'm on the Pruitt train. Here's what I see......I see a team that is responding to real leadership. No platitudes, no hucksterism, no flash, just solid genuine coaching. I think his show of emotion with the press opened their eyes, but I think it's mostly that these kids know a real head football coach when they see it, and it's been a while since they experienced that level of competence. We ain't gonna beat Bama, we ain't gonna win 8. But I can at least see a possible bowl game at the end of the tunnel. Just keep coachin' 'em up CJP.

Oh, and JG and the wideouts balled their a$$es off today.

I dont think anyone either predicts it or believes it is likely to happen - thats the point. If Pruitt somehow actually does pull that off, he deserves a national coach of the year award no doubt.

Agree with all your points JP, but would add, for me at least, seeing the enthusiasm and energy from both the players and coaches was as enjoyable as the technical improvements. Seeing Pruitt on the field at the end of the third quarter encouraging the players showed me a side of him I hadn't seen. Of course the improvements you mentioned finally allowed Pruitt to exibit that level of positive energy. An all around good day for Vol football.

JP, was thinking of posting something like this on the way home from Cincy today after listening on iHeart Radio. Great post, to the point, and quite honest.

The improvement has been sustained. We are still making unforced errors, we still find ways to be in place on defense yet not make the tackle, see Auburn's last TD where a whiff occurred allowing it to happen. Our OC & DC ARE getting a better feel for the personnel they have and how best to utilize them IMO. The offense has improved leaps and bounds. Our defensive front still cannot get a pass rush worthy to be SEC caliber. This was a very good effort by our Vols today and I am proud they got the win as they deserved it. Today's Vols did not play like a bad football team and THAT is an improvement.

JG today reminded me of Crompton’s coming out party against Georgia in 2009. Amazing what good coaching can do.
I'm not ready to breathe a sigh of relief and stop worrying about the position, but today it was nice to feel like our QB was on top of it and leading like he should.

Oh, mostly agreed, Mithrandir. My primary purpose in that response was to point out that there is no 8-4 implied in the second-to-last sentence of the OP. Didn't want anyone mis-reading that.

I'm not sure about coach of the year, but certainly worthy of high praise if things were to turn out that way.

Seemed like Alexis Johnson was a man possessed today. They kept calling his name on the radio broadcast.

Yeah, man, that really was awesome to see. Lads have worked their butts off, it's a real pleasure to see them have the chance to revel in a rewarding outcome. A great day.

I think 6 and a bowl is certainly more feasible than it was a week ago

I agree. And even more than that, I'm a lot more relaxed that we'll find a way to get 5 or more...which means last year will be the ONLY year with 8 losses in our history.

We've already ensured that last year will be the only 0-8 SEC record, so we have that going for us....which is nice.

Agree.

I’ve never thought of JG as a guy to go out and win a big game for us... but today he did that. Hopefully he starts doing it regularly.

Coaching staff did work in the bye week and it showed.

I think we have seen enough to assume a win over Bama at this point.
