Stats for the Year

I've been down on Jones' coaching this year too because of what might've been, but the wins are increasing just like everyone wants. And it's asinine to play an injury into the argument. If Maggitt doesn't get hurt, how many of those close games do we pull out? It goes both ways.

Maggitt big loss, but also, Gaulden. He was poised to have a big yr at nickel. I think North's absence really hurt the 'pass game'. The 'pass game' as they call it was still trying to find an identity in week 12. Either the qb coach is bad, the receivers coach, and/or the play calling. Those guys are stud recruits for a reason. If they end up being duds I'm putting that on coaches. Our 'pass game' should have been lights out this year. Need to make some changes in that area for sure.

I like that the offense seemed to pick up steam the last few weeks (aside from Missouri and I think everyone took the N. Texas game off). But Debord is deboring. Tenn should go after a more imaginative coach for OC. Everyone watching the game, including my 6 year old can guess the play calling, especially in the 4th quarter.

Most of the success is due to the schedule and Nick Chubb's injury. Coaching is the reason we're 8-4 and not 11-1.

Hahahaha what????? You've got one hell of a crystal ball there, chief. You can call a whole game based on a different thing happening on the first play? What if Hurd hadn't fumbled on the goalline in that game?

No doubt coaching cost as dearly against Oklahoma and Florida. But so did two 3rd down holding penalties on Colton Jumper and a deep red zone fumble by our beloved Dobbs in those two games respectively.

Don't limit what you call coaching to your subjective view of what playcalling should be. Has Jalen Hurd improved this year? Has our mismash offensive line performed? Have we utilized our strengths and hidden or weaknesses? DO WE HAVE THE BEST SPECIAL TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY?

That's coaching, too.

Nice stats. One thing I found a bit intriguing is Tennessee was excellent on 3rd down defense but ranked near the last in the nation in 4th down defense. And many of the 4th downs were not short yardage.

Why the large difference between 3rd and 4th?

One reason I think is that there are so few 4th down attempts you can get a skewed stat. Also, with Florida and Oklahoma, they attempted several because they were desperate, and just pulled it off. Sometimes guessed the wrong defense, like the 4th and 14 at Florida, sometimes just the offense making a great play, like the fade route catch in the end zone by Oklahoma.

I wouldn't say excellent coaching, but yes CBJ has this program in better shape than it's been in a long time. This team is talented and competes with whoever it plays. Credit should go to CBJ, just like the criticism has.

Exactly. We had two losses squarely on coaching. No excuse losing to UF twice in a row like we did. Oklahoma was inexcusable.

But the team has improved. O line was worlds better than last year. Debord deserves much credit for that

People saying fahrr debord need to look at what he has done for this offense. No we weren't a huge threat at passing the ball but we ran over nearly every team this year. Let up a lot less sacks, consistently moved the chains. Also hats off to mark elder. Dude deserves coach of the year.

I am glad the team is 8-4 this year. Yes there were some questionable coaching decisions this year. But, how long ago we were 5-7. I know we could have and should have been better, but vol brethren we are in a way better position. We have depth now. Injuries weren't too kind to us this year for the 11-1 or the 10-2 season, but next year it's more than possible. Going forward we must have better product out of the passing game. Go Vols:dance2:

You do realize that there is more to offense than throwing the football right? We clearly have a system in place that works, what with TWO 5* running backs and all. Not to mention we had massive injuries among our wide receivers.

We beat only 2 teams going to bowl games this year.

Bowling Green and Georgia.

All five teams we beat in our current winning streak are home for Christmas.

If not for Oklahoma this would've been the softest schedule in SEC history.

That's freaking hilarious because of how untrue it is. Look at Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky's annual schedules for example. "If not for Oklahoma..." newsflash, Tennessee is about the only team in the SEC who REGULARLY plays a top 10 OOC opponent every year. Not to mention ALABAMA is our permanent crossover each year. Which means we usually have two extremely tough games that the rest of the SEC East doesn't have to deal with every year (One national power OOC and Alabama in conference) Florida does whenever Florida State is good (and they got stomped last night, something that didn't happen to us all year), but other than they they schedule New Mexico Technical Tech, Upper New York School for Respiratory Ailments, and the Wyoming University for kids who can't read good as their other opponents.

Even without Oklahoma our schedule would've still been one of the toughest schedules in the SEC, especially the East. You do realize that 4 of the teams we beat in our win streak were SEC EAST opponents and there's nothing we can do about that? And you do realize that the rest of the SEC East played all those same teams?

But yeah, I see how us playing Bowling Green, W. Carolina, Oklahoma and North Texas are much worse than:

Florida playing New Mexico St, Florida Atlantic, East Carolina, FSU

Or Georgia playing LA Monroe, Southern, GA Southern, and GA Tech (Not a single decent OOC opponent)

or Kentucky playing EKU, LA Lafayette, Charlotte and Louisville (Once again nobody good OOC)

Or Missouri playing SEMO ST, Arky St, Connecticut, and BYU.

But yeah, keep going with your incessant hating of Butch Jones and skewing your posts to only look at the negatives. Why be a Vol fan if it's this damn tough to find anything positive to say about the team and coach? Perhaps you would have a better time hopping from to the team that wins the championship every year since that's the only way your expectations will come close to being met.

Also how about Barnett Finishing tied for second in the SEC with 9 sacks? Hats off to him. His safety in the third quarter was a punch in the gut to candy. I absolutely love watching him play, and going into next year our D line is going to be stacked

He made a huge comeback toward the end of the season. Started off slow and ended off huge!

This is the first time since 1996 that we didn't have a double digit loss on the year.

I agree that you can put 1-2 of our loses on the coaches, but you have to give them credit for having our team ready to play every single week. We held the lead in all 4 loses, and we were ahead in 3 of those 4 loses with less than 4 minutes to play in the game. We are getting closer.

These coaches are responsible for bringing Tennessee back to national relevance and next year will be the year of the VOLS!

Don't think we had a double digit loss in 98. 😄

Feel free to puke. I'll even get ya a bucket.

Then when you are done, you can get your panties out of a wad and stop being so dang sensitive. I'm loving the success we have had. Feels good to beat the hell out of vandy and Kentucky again. But the offense, especially in the 4th quarter when we have a lead gets incredibly predictable.

Take off the homer goggles and actually post something relevant to the discussion instead of whining and taking posts out of context.

Just a few more intersting stats. SIAP any of them:

  • Vols have the second-longest winning streak in the SEC, at 5 ... (Bama has longest, at 9).
  • Five teams have near or above 400 total points scored on the season ... four are in the SEC West (Ole Miss at 483, Arky at 422, Bama at 414, and Miss St at 396) ... the other is the Vols, at 412.
  • Our points for / points against ratio, at 1.62 (412 PF / 254 PA) is 4th-best in the SEC, behind Bama (2.41), Ole Miss (1.76), and just behind Florida (1.63).
  • We defended Neyland pretty well, at 5-2 in home games. Best in the SEC was LSU, at 7-1 in home games. No SEC team was perfect defending their house in 2015.

Good catch, we saw teams convert 4th downs against us with regularity. I expect teams early next year to challenge our defense and this weakness to determine if we've done much about it.

This post is so stupid that it doesn't even deserve a response, so I'm just gonna ignore it and leave it alone

Evan Berry led the nation in KO returns.
Cam Sutton led the nation in punt returns.
Vols 2nd in SEC in rushing per game, 5th in total offense, 4th in scoring offense.
Vols 6th in the SEC, 26th in the nation in scoring defense.
4th in nation, 1st in SEC in 3rd down conversion defense.
2n in SEC in 3rd down conversion offense.
Aaron Medley, after a shaky start, became solid down the stretch, after a firm statement by Butch that he was our kicker.

The talent on the team has been greatly upgraded, but much of this success is also due to excellent coaching.

And we lost to every good team on our schedule, after being in position to win every one of them, largely due to players not stepping up & some really questionable coaching decisions. A season where we made steps, but a HUGE missed opportunity. Next year, we will find out if Butch is the guy.

Nevermind that Georgia won their 9th game and Chubb's replacement went over 1,000 yards rushing yesterday. Have a beer and just be thankful that it'll be at least a month before you'll have another game to get pissed at and make up bad arguments about.

These threads constantly getting detailed with the same stuff is old. You're like the guy that walks up to The family on the beach and hands them a flyer about skin cancer and global warming.

We didn't lose to UGA. Anytime we beat a good team, the negavols say that team isn't any good anymore.
