Statistical Comparison (TN vs GA)

Georgia is ranked #1 in six different defensive statistical categories in the SEC. We are ranked #1 in zero of them. I'll go throw up now.

You cannot judge this team, or this coaching staff, by the outcome of this game. This is not a fair fight, by any measure. Forget that UT is at home. That makes little difference, if at all. UGA is loaded with talent; they have a full roster; and the coaching staff is dialed in. UT has nowhere near the talent that UGA does; is down roughly 15 on the standard 85 scholarship roster; and is still learning the system under a first year coaching staff. This is the Battle of Thermopylae in 2021. Unfortunately, we're the Spartans in this one.

UGA wins. UT needs to stay as healthy as they can, and then go 2-0 down the stretch. 7-5 gets us to a decent bowl game, and then we look forward to 2022, and see what Heupel and this staff can do in recruiting. Over the past what feels like last 100 years, I've been fooled by Dooley, Jones, and even Pruitt. If I were you, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in what I'm about to say here. But there's just something about Coach Heupel, and his "never give up" staff...and this team...that tell me good times are coming. I just don't think we can beat UGA without them giving us a lot of help. I've watched every UGA game this season. They might not win the Natty, but the only team that can stop them is themselves.

I'm already on the record about my appetite for crow if UT wins. I'll honor it, here, with my own thread.

So...make life tough on UGA; win the last two; and win the bowl game. 8-5? I'll take that all day given what we started with.

Go Vols. Good times, they be coming.

If you look at total offense rankings, Florida is the best offense they have played. And you saw how that worked out. UGA offense stat wise is very similar to UT.
Yes but…

if you take out non-power 5 opponents, Tennessee is ranked 15th and Florida 27th. Thats what makes stats so hard is the skewing from these money games.

To your point, I saw this tweet yesterday about the records of the top playoff contenders' opponents minus the fluff competition. It's easy to see why Bama is still ranked #2 over some of the undefeated teams. Look at OU, pathetic. I can't wait for them to get theirs after they join our conference.

Gotta have both- a great offense and a good defense will do the trick.

Ok….take the UGA game out of the stats for every team they played and see how drastically their stats change. You can make stats show whatever you want.

Football team stats are always interesting and often misleading........but one of the few areas where Georgia is ranked low is the numbers of plays per game. They are 126th and only run an average of 62 plays per game (only 54 plays the last 3 games average). Now, they are still ranked 13th in points put up, just ahead of Tennessee. Of course that means they are very efficient in points per play, but that also means they want to grind it out with occasional chunk plays. And Tennessee was originally a very high play per game number, but of late we have had our defense on the field for 85 to 99 plays. So is there anything here in the numbers that bodes well for the Vols? Most believe we cannot put together 8 and 10 play drives. So is this a game where we will run our fast break and no huddle, but run the play clock down to 5 much of the time to stretch out our possessions? It will be interesting to see Coach Heup's approach.
The reason for so few plays is simple. UGA is so far ahead in the 2nd half that they milk the clock. They have only thrown 20 passed in the 4th quarter all season.

So, what you are saying is that "ON PAPER", the Vols tend to look as good as the Dawgs, right? If so, I am going to sneak into Neyland Friday night and line Shields Watkins Field with paper.

This is a perfect example of jimmies and Joes vs Xs and Os.. I believe we have better coaching/scheme, but Georgia’s talent is on another level. Recruiting is one of, if not the most important quality in a head coach.

Coaching can even the playing field when they is less talent. Myer @ Utah over UF for example.
