I'm used to parking in the State Street Parking Garage.
It's free on the weekends, and not a bad walk to the stadium - through Market Square, past the SunSphere -into Fort Sanders and then the pedestrian bridge across Cumberland.

I'm assuming that since App. State is on a Thursday, it won't be free. Can any of you Knoxville guys verify? Is it free say after 5:00 pm?

According to site.
These city owned parking garages offer free parking after 6:00 pm M-F and all day on weekends, except for special events.

It maybe different for the Thursday night game. Rates are $1/hr max daily is $7.00. The worst thing would be paying $1.00 if you arrive at 5pm.

The attendants stay at Market Square Garage, State Street and Locust Garage after 6pm, but the sign reflects that “Parking is free upon entry after 6pm.” If you come in at 5:00pm, you could be charged a fee if the attendant is still there when you leave. The attendants at these higher traffic locations stay until 8pm. The gates come down in all garages at 7am each weekday. If you pull up without a ticket, we start your time at 7am (so you are not charged for the free nights).

Good information. Thank you. I hope 100 years passes before we play again on a Thursday.

So you can park there for free on game days? Does it fill up super early?

Yes if fills up, depending on the game 2:30 bama or UF - you'll be ok arriving 3:00hrs before or earlier. Seems the noon games are easier to get a spot if you are running late. Maybe the quality of the opponent. I've had good luck there, but I like to get there 4 or so hours or so before kick.

OP, I would think the downtown area will be similar to a normal game day except that some of the people that park in the garages may leave their cars in there and walk to the stadium. That's the only thing I could see that would limit garage spots.

The attendants leave around 7 PM, so you will not have to pay when you leave. The challenge will be finding a spot. That garage is typically full with downtown workers during the day, so there will be very few spaces to be had if you were showing up during working hours.

I will try it out this year, I took the water taxi last year which was amazing but they went out of business. I sure hope someone takes it over!

I always park at either Market Square or State Street if I don't have plans on tailgating. I've never had an issue where I didn't find a spot. If I didn't, I would just go park at the free parking lot on Willow Avenue next to Barley's. Decently long walk, but I don't mind it.

I like the way you think.

I had a friend that would log 4 or 5 miles on a treadmill in the morning, then whine because of a mile walk to the stadium.

If its one of the pretty fall days and you are physically able, a 1 or 2 mile walk is a gift.

This!

And that's why I've never really gotten too bent out of shape for fighting/paying for parking passes. I need the exercise, and the extra bucks in my pocket for being frugal.

Edit:
By the way... the walk from state street to the stadium is fairly level - amazing considering the layout of the UT campus. There are two pedestrian bridges that make this possible - one across Henley street close to the Sunsphere, and another across the Cumberland avenue "Gully" connecting Fort Sanders to the hill.

I would just walk gay street straight to the river and take Neyland walk to the stadium!

I may try parking there. I've parked in a lot of different places and it always up hill, both ways.
