Starting RB next season

It will be lane or neal. No One else will be close. How many times do we have to go through this... Freshmen should not be starting for Ut. It's a bad thing if they are. Hell, hardesty, graham, Stephens, Lewis, Henry, foster, houston all needed time. Lane could be a phenomenal back. So could neal....

I just hate reading the thousands of posters that can't wait for freshmen to come in and take the reigns... Heck, the result of 4 and 5 star freshmen on the field is a 5 and 7 season.

Really??Tell that to South Carolina, and that NO name running back that was burning up the conference AS A FRESHMAN......and continued this year until he tore his ACL.......I've seen too many great freshman running backs on other teams do great things, while Fulber and company had them sitting until their last of eligibility remained.....Some of these studs come out of H.S. equiped....just needing some coaching, etc...Now if you want to reinstate a redshirt rule for EVERYONE, then fine...otherwise, line them up, and give to the best one you can suit up....
:salute:

Jamal Lewis was not expected to get as many carries his freshman year. Travis Henry hurt his knee doing absurd amounts of weight in squats and Jamal had a very nice August.

I do not see another Jamal out there for us but I think that an Edwards would get plenty of carries with a healthier and more decisive Lane.

I say we have a GREAT shot at Mike Davis now that we have Graham and Davis is de-commit from FLA...but would still say he has to earn the job in practice...wiht our current roster though, I would say Lane starts just because of the games he had towards the end of the season.

By the way, UGA rubbed in our faces their stud RB...jasper sanks...

I think if we could see history repeat if Marshall gets fat and we get a stud from Georgia.

Edit: my bad, I meant Lane not Neal.

Don't be so quick to jump the gun with that comment! Who knows what Neal can do with a running backs coach teaching him.... To my knowledge he's never been coached by a true running backs coach so he may turn out great... I'd like to see them all come out and be top notch backs so the team will be well rounded with play makers at every position on the field and the depth chart......GO VOLS Coach em up C.J.Graham

Good opportunity for a freshmen coming, if UT could possibly land Mike Davis (#95 rivals top 100) would really help. Who do you expect to start? Lane looked good at times. Toney is a little undersized, Smith is in the mix.

Guys comin in:

We could give two Frosh of Davis' caliber plenty of playing time, imo. It might take a few games to win the starting position, but I'm pretty sure it would happen. More a question of how soon... and that may have more to do with how quickly they learn the offense and are ready to run.

If I could pick a time to introduce a phenom, I'd like to do that at the second half against Georgia.

I don't think the signficance of that timing would escape Dooley, although that was earlier in the season. So, if ready, why not the second half versus NC State?

We need a RB phenom, badly.

UT definitely needs a great RB. Some always seem to think a Fr is going to be that "guy". I didn't think Lane would be the guy this year. Fr rarely are and the OL turned out worse than any of us thought they would.

Now... I am going to flip on that... go with history again... and say that Lane has a very good chance of surprising people next fall.

UT WILL get its run blocking straight. I still think CCB being gone was part of that. They will change schemes and develop more strength. Meetings and film study until the OL's are sick of it.

In the meantime, Lane will finish healing his knee. He will gain some muscle and mature.

The guy wasn't ready as a Freshman. I think he will improve Fr to Soph roughly the same amount as D Rogers did.

Though your examples are terrible, I didn't say that once in every 5 years or so a legitimate players comes in ready to compete. More so, I am.saying that this board writes off players if they aren't immediate studs and then puts the same expectations on the next class of freshmen.

And that it's stupid to repeat that mistake over and over.

If freshmen are starting, it 999 times out of a thousand, it is a bad sign

I agree with you about this board, however saying a freshmen tailback rarely makes an impact flies in the face of facts. Jamal Lewis rushed for 1300+ yards as a freshman... Dyer, Lattimore had great success as freshman.
Therefore your argument is invalid.

What about Imani Cross? I'm not lobbying he would be the best, just saying, I thought he was another new guy coming in who will get a look sooner or later.

Edited note: looks like events have overtaken me and he is no longer in the picture; I am disappointed, as he was our very first commit for this '12 class.

If Lane had been 100% all year and completely recovered from his knee injey he would have had a much better year. Its obvious he didn't 100% trust his knee and other nagging injuries alot of true FR get. I expect him to have a Breakout Soph year. The talent is there big time.

That also validated the arguement... 999/1000. Also, though Rb is often the exception, but Dyer didn't start right away, Lewis benefited from others getting injured, crowell this year only started bc the top 3 backs left the team or got kicked off. They converted a linebacker to rb that started over him...

I am really not trying to be that confrontational, just saying that starting freshmen is almost an indicator of injuries, lack of depth, lack of talent.

Not a negavol either. Love dooley. Completely expect 8+ wins next year

M clarett. A stud RB can do great work as a freshman.

If bryce brown was not injured I think he could have done more. It is less likely than darick being a good teammate but I would love to see bryce walk on.

His true freshman stats were not bad at all.

Fulmer? Is that you? I knew you hated playing freshmen but....man c'mon

Plus, he was held out a game or two when there were questions about his eligibility.

Good examples. My earlier post was referring to a guy who played as a Frosh for Derek's dad who did pretty well some years ago.

Yep I agree with you.

It is rare but we want a rare talent and with jay graham and a VERY thin db roster plus a very strong passing game to get them some space I would hope we are attractive to a stud rb.
