At some point a coach is gona have to evaluate hs qb much better. Using you scenerio. Mac if he is good you only have him for 1 yr
What do we know about the transfer from Colorado, Ryan Staub?

If Joey can't play, where is he in the mix?

If Joey does come back, they need to make a better effort of getting GMac some more in game playing time.

Playing time of any backup will be dependent upon how the games go. It is that way for EVERY team in the country.

We need to stop acting like CJH is any different when it comes to QB play than any other coach who is coaching a team that has a shot at the playoffs. None of them freely substitute the backup just to give the backup playing time in games they must win unless an injury makes that necessary.

All teams who see a QB leaving have the same issue as Tennessee.

And with the SEC schedule what it is - if we have backups playing at key positions, we are in trouble - just like other teams would be.

Most teams will be looking for a starting QB every year in the portal because most QB's will more than likely transfer or hold out for more $$$. At the end of the day, its who gives you the best chance to win. Not who your freind is.

I think when u talk about NFL draft it can’t be just 1 good season, it would have to be 1 great season where the QB played at an elite level. Otherwise he’s going back to school and trying to improve his film
Especially in the world of NIL.

I have to strongly disagree. It's D1 College Football. No one "lets" ANYONE beat them out of an opportunity to start. You can bet your ass that both GMac and Merk were doing everything they could to win that starting job.
They didn’t do enough period. JA wasn’t some big name QB. He had hella questions when he got to Knoxville. He flat out beat them for the job and they had all offseason to win it before he ever arrived.

Had the weirdest dream.
GMAC was like 8 feet tall and his QB stance was like the scary flute lady from "IT".

sCary and not in a good way

On one hand, getting Joey backs makes things easier. On the other hand, Joey is nothing but a one year rental and we only postpone Gmac or Faizon's inevitable transfer by a year or two.

Heupel backed himself into a corner by going all in on Leavitt, missing, and now hinging the 2026 season on a judge ruling in his favor.

Heupel should have turn the leaf over to Gmac the minute the regular season was over and allow him to get a lot of reps as the starter plus bowl game just as insurance in case Joey doesn't get another year.

The worst case for Heupel is rolling into next season with Gmac with virtually no serious experience.

You're absolutely correct; Aguilar wasn't a big name when he arrived in Knoxville. He IS a big name now, and he'll enter the 2026 season as a top 10, or even top 5 QB1.

Like every other program we are finding what we can and piecing together a different football team each season - hoping the sum of all parts is a contender. I suppose this is what the NIL era has evolved into.

It’s a new season. All are older, stronger and hopefully faster. And they have the opportunity to show what they can do NOW,

Changed my vote to George “Peyton Manning” MacIntyre after the Joey “Heath Shuler” Aguilar news

Of course. My comment was about last offseason. He should have a better grasp of the offense, be more comfortable with teammates, get bigger, & stronger. That’s part of developing players, they should never stay the same each year because if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. We’ll find out if he can process quickly and be accurate downfield. If he can he should have a great season.
