Starting QB going into spring practice?

I have no idea, but I'd assume that the job is considered "open" for competition. Nick Stephens would be the initial front runner just because he is the senior guy with the most experience, but I'd expect him to be challenged by at least one of the other guys. Just guessing . . .

I agree, it's only right that Stephens gets the nod going into spring practice, simply because of experience. That doesn't mean it will stay that way though.

Agreed. Whoever plays the best and gives us the best chance to win, regardless of seniority, should get the job. If it is dead even between an upper classman and a freshman, I think the freshman should get the job to get him some experience. Of course, I'll just shut up and let the coaches do their job. Good luck, boys! Go Vols!

As good as Bray may turn out to be, I don't think he will be starting based on our early schedule with Oregon and Florida in games 2 and 3. I think Stephens starts game 1.

Don't care really one way or another, just want the guy who gives us the best chance to be the best we can be. Go Big Orange!!

I would be willing to bet that there is no depth chart at this point. Coach Chaney and Thompson have an idea of what these guys can do but if I were a betting man I would say that nothing will be concrete until after Spring Practice. Coach Dooley has yet to have the opportunity to see these guys in the new schemes. You will see guys who rode the bench under Fulmer and Kiffin who will excel under Dooley. That is typically how it works, not saying it will but that is what I think we will see. I think competition will be highly emphasized as it should be every practice in both the spring and the fall. Im speaking of the team as a whole not just at QB. GO VOLS!!!

Only fair that Nick gets it because of Seniority? Who does that sound like..

Leave it open...

Stephens has the physical tools for sure, and I think playing under CJC helped him last year...his relationship with CJC should also give him a leg up since he will be calling the plays, but I think Bray will be given a fair shot and the best man will win the job...not sure who that is just yet, but hopefully the competition will bring the best out of them

If it weren't for us replacing 4 of 5 starters on the OL I would not be that worried about the Offense as a whole...have pretty good play makers around the QB position

I didn't say that, I said he deserves to get the nod going in to spring, simply because of EXPERIENCE. It doesn't mean it will stay that way though, the best QB will start. Should be an interesting competition.

Bray needs to get some meat on his bones. He's not going to be physically ready come the start of the season. I do think he'll have a great sophmore year.

Man it is so good to be 4-5 deep instead of 2. Only my personal opinion, but I think Simms gets it this year and then a dog fight again next year between Bray and Nance. I like Brays accuracy, but Nance looks very good in his videos.

I too think Simms will get the nod this yr and I think he does well. This will give Bray and Nance plenty of time to grow, mature, and get engrained into the system and college ball. If all of this pans out we could be pretty set at the QB positon for the next 4 yrs. However, I do think Simms will get the nod this yr with the next season Bray's to lose that is unless Simms totaly shocks the world next yr. I really hope Bennie works with Bray's speed and agility.

Simms and Stephens, those are the 2 front runners IMO. I think Bray will have a great career here, just not next year.

I agree with VolNUT on the QB starting as Simms. Stephens has a year under his belt but not enough talent. Bray has the talent but not enough size. They are gonna have to feed that boy this year. I would love to see us win 8 games and upset one of the big rivals maybe Bama.I wish we could beat Bama, Florida, Oregon, and Georgia, but I see don't see us that good this year. Let's give coach Dooley time and pray for the best. Go Vols!

Stephens and Crompton were supposedly neck and neck all year long until a "tough" decision was made in Crompton's favor. I found that interesting since Stephens had a broken wrist and couldn't really even compete until the fall. It makes me think that if they both would have been healthy that maybe Stephens would have won outright. I think it's pretty much Stephen's to lose, but one thing is for sure. There is nothing like a good QB battle to get the juices flowing in the Spring!!! I'll take anything instead of silence, I need my football fix man!!!

Crompton threw three INT's against a beatable UCLA team, and the previous staff refuse to pull him in favor of Stephens. So what does that say about Stephens? The ? is what scheme Coach Chaney is gonna run, and which QB picks it up the fastest. Sims just started throwing again so he may be a little rusty, and Bray has been here since late Dec..Stephens may get the early nod, but Bray beats him out in the fall. Just my OP.

It tells us how good they knew Crompton COULD BE and they turned out to be right once he righted the ship.

We can talk about how good Bray is going to be all we want. Our early season schedule is going to make it completely stupid to throw him out there from day 1 as a true freshman. It does not make sense. If we opened the season with some cupcakes it would be much more likely. The best hope for Bray seeing the field this season would be a similar situation as with Manning his freshman year.

I am sure it's open, but who gets the first run with the first taem--gotta be Nick. You can't just flip a coin and say winner gets the initial reps
