Starting first team the next two weeks........

I dont follow that logic though. Our starters got embarrassed by WV, so CJP put in the backups, who also got embarrassed (makes total sense to me). I dont see it creating competition. I see it creating turmoil and creating lack of confidence in the starters.

You dont focus on your #2s until you got your #1s straightened out.

If CJP has no earthly idea who his good players are yet and can't tell the difference between his 1s and 2s, then God help us all.
some players are better under the lights than practice, and vice versa. only way to know is to play them. he only has film on most guys against themselves.

how does keeping the 1s in build confidence if we are way ahead? and turmoil seriously? every coach plays their 2s whenever they can. what are we going to figure out in one more quarter with our starters? risk of injury makes it not worth it.

butch also never focused on the 2s.

I think the plan will probably be for the starters to play the first half and whatever it takes in the second half to win the game. If were up something like 35 to 0 then I'm sure we'll see Chryst and maybe the other QB's. Should see all the RB's and the OL. I hope it turns out to be a no n drama game so we can see some of the backups in this game.

That was CBJ's theory, and it's most likely why there was so much drop off in production when a starter went down and the backup had to play.

I believe this to be true. Another factor that added to this in the last 2 years was that we couldn't put away the patsy games to bring in the 2nd-3rd teams. AppyState, Ohio, WTexas etc. Then as we lost players they were being replaced by practice statues.

Butch’s main problem was not holding the players accountable and trusting them too much. He let non freshmen skip workouts and segments of practices if they felt they didn’t need to. This worked fine with guys like Sutton, Dobbs, Kamara, and Barnett b/c they all had a freak level personal drive. This group of players didn’t have that drive so they would slack off. That is why there was a huge drop off between starters and their backups.

Even if it is ETSU these guys will I think get a big boost from a win, a little success usually begets more. I'm looking forward to seeing what exactly Chryst brings to the table.

If we have a halftime lead of at least 28 points, I think the starters are in for the first series in the second half, then the subs will start reporting in, especially if they score on the first series. If it is closer, the starters will stay in longer.

CBJ rarely could get the team to mount a big enough lead to use the 2nd teamers.

or else more embarrassment is coming.
I taped the Auburn game and have watched it, more embarrassment is coming. Their DL is sick, and it's on the road, which always helps good pass rushers to play at home. I hope it's a noon kick and the crowd won't be real into it, otherwise our OL minus Kennedy will probably get JG killed. I am glad the kid is tough, he'll need to be.

I totally get building depth, but if you're first team players arent ready for prime time and suck, what's the point in putting in their backups who by logic shouldnt be as good?
It could be that they are not as good because they have less experience. Getting them into actual games may show that they are better than those who are now starting. Depth develops faster with experience.

its not playing time that gives you depth! PLAYING TIME GIVES YOU EXPERIENCE!

ITS RECRUITING THAT GIVES YOU DEPTH!

Wow...what a cowardly way to think. Glad you're not our coach.

It’s the cutting edge of college football. Keep your guys safe for the games they can win. Our undersized players are going to get annihilated by these NFL lite squads. Could very well play ourselves out of a bowl game because of the long term injury impact.

I think it was more because the starters (who are supposedly your best players) were getting blown off the field in most games and so it stands to reason that the #2s for the most part arent as good as the #1s and that's why you saw what you saw.

We didn't have enough good #1s let alone good #2s. I go back to a previous post. You cant build depth if your foundation sucks. the foundation is made up of your #1s.

I know Tennessee wants to be as healthy and rested as possible before the Florida game, but I think this team needs to play its starters as much as possible the next two weeks. They need playing/practice time BAD, especially the OL and DBs. I would keep my starters in until at least the 4th quarter the next two games, even if those games are long out of reach by that point strictly to give these units time to play in real game situations. Thoughts?

I'm pretty confident if we lose to UF you can kiss 6 wins goodbye. So it's pretty imperative that we have whatever we are calling our "A" game ready to go for them.
At the rate we see injuries, we better see 3rd string

They'll never do that, but I agree with you in principle. Need to think long term here.
