Starting 5 on O-line still up in the air per Mahoney today.

11 pages of debate based on about 3 clips of video this fall. There is no magic cure for this line. Be patient and realize it still might take a year.

Cancel the season

I know right???
How dare people come on here and discuss football like adults? I mean even the negative?
Real fans only scream "SEC champs and whip dey azz"... :p

It is going to be a long season. Kendrick is a known commodity for staff that can play guard or tackle. He may not start the season opener, but he will play a lot. They may be giving Thomas a chance with Kendrick a backup plan at several spots.

We all knew the online would be weak. Jackson is a loss, but honestly he had a poor season last year. Unfortunately we have had some misses in online recruiting. Hopefully this years class will develop and in the future we will not be having these discussions.

I know they have pushed Thomas to grasp center since bowl practice. Gave him every opportunity. When the move to tackle happened that would indicate he just can't get it at center.

Mack is not strong enough for SEC tackles. They would like someone to step in that can handle mental like he can and offer more from a strength standpoint.

What Chis says makes sense (he has as much info out of the complex as anyone outside of Brice). If you want stronger and mentally equal, Robertson can do that. They would have to be confident that Jones could handle guard.

Robertson quickly went to LG once Jackson went down

No one has specifically told me that but I trust Chris Low a lot. I've known Chris for a long time..

I said in another post we will know come Thursday the top 5 and it is looking like Kerbyson-Robertson-Crowder-Jones-Thomas Reading the tea leaves and things I have heard.

Why would you put a true freshman and Thomas on same side?

Seems like Debord would bring some levity to the situation, and Butch would listen.
Idk what's going on

Oh he wont relax. Volfan10735 is related to crowder in some way. Say anything about crowder and he can't handle it. Take a look at his post history.

I'll tell you this much. .. he knows more about what's going on with this OL than anyone on VN... based on inside knowledge and previous experience.

Hands down

I would hope so... but most managers I know including myself have unfortunately prevented people from confronting us with the truth about a personnel issue by how we "frame" things with our verbal and non-verbal communication.
The messages is, "This IS what we think.... RIGHT?"

Hopefully Jones and Debord are wiser than that... but it happens to the very best of leaders at times.

bingo...

Okay, no problem. What's your opinion?

For many here, Kendrick has more than out-shined certain competition.
I'm a life long Vol fan, no history of questioning any coach other than Dooley (and I'm not asking forgiveness for that one) but I'm confused as any.
Outsiders, like me, find it odd. People closer, find it odd. Maybe there is something we don't know??
I just want to win so my confusion is coming to the front.
But it's not like I'm really complaining given the starters haven't been named. Just that *IF this is true, I will have questions, just like most. :dunno:

I haven't seen Kendrick in practice at all and not much in games. Haven't seen Thomas at all this year. I just find this conversation interesting. I too am a lifelong vol fan and only want to see the vols win.

After mulling over what you said while weed eating, I believe you are saying that Butch does not like Kendrick for some reason and this clouds his opinion. He can't see that Kendrick is better. Does that sound like what you are trying to say?

how do you know it will cost them games?

No one I've spoken with (and I ain't telling anyone who I've spoken with) knows why

Just based on what I am reading on here, many posters think Thomas is gonna get steamrolled and Kendrick wouldn't.
I am just trying to understand all sides here.

Yes. But I'm just laying out a possibility. My questions are largely based on the few practice clips we have and then how the two guys seemed to perform (to my unqualified eye) last year when playing. Kendrick looked like UT's quickest OT... and it didn't appear to be very close.

It might not be personality. We all have a mechanism in our head that causes us to see what we expect sometimes rather than what's there. It could be anything. It could be nothing more than Jones' drawing a hard opinion about the relative talents of the two guys while recruiting them.

Check this out for an illustration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahg6qcgoay4

If I had to guess, I'd say that plays into him being enamored with Thomas. He might have thought, "this guy has future NFL athlete written all over him"... and now just thinks that it will "click" at any moment. While intently watching for it to "click".... he misses others playing better and particularly those that maybe his expectations weren't as high for.

Kerbyson-Mosely-Thomas-Robertson-Kendrick.......Best line?

Nope.

Take Mosley out, for sure.

Thomas apparently not catching on with the mental part of C, either.

Kerbyson and Robertson for sure, though Robertson might go left side.

The rest is what everyone's wondering.

Brett is under the impression that he will not be starting at any position once Jashon is back. How the coaches have come to this decision is beyond me, but that's how it stands right now.

I don't get this at all. He was solid all spring at OT. At times he looked like our best OT when he got a chance last season.

Does the staff have it in for him, or are they putting too much stock in practice or something? How is Kendrick not one of our best 5?

Fortenberry said this morning they would have liked for Robertson to take the center spot until Jackson went down. They believe it would have made the entire OL better..

And it still could. Hope we do find out something toward the end of the week. I just want them to work on continuity with whomever the starting 5 are.

Yeah, that exactly matches what Chris was saying last night on 104.5 The Zone.

I don't want this to be a coulda-been, woulda-been year. I really wish the coaches and players well in breaking a code, any code, on how to make the OLine strong this season. I personally hope Kendrick and Jack Jones are parts of the solution, but am open to whatever the coaches think is best. Just gotta find a way to reliably protect the QB and open some holes for the RBs.
