Dooley was quoted as saying, “You guys heard me talk a little bit about a `second season’ and I think it is all pretty clear that the legacy of this team and the character of this team is going to be defined by how we compete these last four games,” Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley said.

This is precisely why Dooley needs to be fired. He believes that this team is successful if it can beat the dregs of this conference. That is how we have become one of those dregs of the conference.

I got furious just reading that article.

If the team quits on Dooley, then he would be right. This team would be remembered as being close to winning in several games, then just giving up against the weaker opponents at the end of the season.

If the team wins the last 4 games, why would that be any different? The teams legacy will hopefully be one of hard fought losses against very tough opponents and sound beating of lesser ones.

Yea, he should just tell the team to give up and not try to finish the season out strong.

Dear lord. What the heck else is he supposed to say? His job is to win games and to keep his team in a good frame of mind. Packing this season in as a complete failure like some fans have already done should not be an option for the head coach. He is doing what he has to do under some fairly dire circumstances to keep this team together and keep growing. He has done fairly well at that. I for one look forward to the rest of the year and some wins. That will certainly feel a lot better than October has felt. I'm glad the team is putting that horrible month behind them and moving on.

You're right, he should of said we have nothing to play for and the team will mail it in and we might as well just forfeit the last 4 games. You have plenty to be furious about, just not this quote.

Finally someone makes some sense.

He has to continue to do his job until / if he is replaced.

With that being said, I still believe Missouri and Vandy are toss up games the way the defenese is playing.

To be clear, I hope he is replaced, but only if it is great hire. No Kriby Smart, No Petrino, etc

I can't argue with the OPs interpretation. He also didn't understand the firestorm regarding last year's loss to KY and how miffed the fanbase was that he disappeared for a month following that game. I think he understands and respects the tradition at UT but I don't think he understands the expectations. He makes comments sometimes like he thinks he's still at LaTech. It doesn't fly here.

At UT there aren't 2 seasons; one vs the good teams and one versus Vandy, Ky, etc. There's 1 season. And the team is expected to perform well over the entire season. If this team can rally to 8-5 it would be an obvious improvement but simply not good enough imo.

I thought we played in the SEC.? If it's not important to win any of the SEC games at the front of the schedule maybe we could move to the MAC,Sunbelt

Playing 4 teams with very few wins doesn't mean squat, for all practical purposes this season is a bust even if we beat a couple of bottom feeders (such as ourselves)
Finishing 2-3 teams from the bottom of the SEC east won't get you a cup of coffee!

How many times do I have to hear "OMG, those are great teams. Do you really expect us to beat ranked teams?"

Let me make myself clear.

THIS IS TENNESSEE!!! WE SHOULD BEAT RANKED TEAMS!!!! WE HAVE BEAT RANKED TEAMS!! WE HAD BETTER GET BACK TO BEATING RANKED TEAMS!!

If you are of the mindset that expecting us to beat ranked teams is just wishful thinking, then you are either an idiot, or a very uninformed fan.

Beating UK and Vandy is wonderful. But it is not a great accomplishment. Just like beating UT is NO LONGER a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT. We are just another "W" on everyone's schedule.

Ever heard of a figure of speech. Kind of like when a coach tells him team at halftime that the second half is a "whole new ballgame." The coach probably doesn't mean that there are two distinct football games going on. I'm literally smacking myself in the forehead as I type this, because I find it hard to believe you could be stupid enough to not understand what a figure of speech is.

Regardless, he never said the first half of the season didn't matter. You just made that up and now are trying to change the subject so you don't look like the fool you are.

Yea, maybe. But he IS still the HC.. And I won't fault the man for wanting his team to continue to play hard and try to win the rest of the games on the schedule.

Well, then don't. I will! Don't get cocky and poke your chest out when you know your in the easier portion of your schedule and obviously have the talent to win out! This chump looked like he was gonna get his azz whipped before every game in the past few weeks.. You (and the players) could see the defeat in his eyes before the whistle was blown! He doesn't deserve to win out and keep his job, and the players don't deserve a coach that is going to put them in a position to lose time and time again against EQUAL competition...****!

Well Einstein. I never said Dooley said the first half wasn't important. I was making a comment about all those "But those are great teams" "Did you expect to win" "We are right in line with predictions"
. Now stop licking the windows and run along
