If I was starting a band, I think I would call us The Stargazers.

About as hit and miss as the 3 and 4 stars. Some great players that did what they were predicted to do. Some guys that did OK. Some guys that were overrated badly. Some guys that got injured or had illnesses that cut it short.

The lesson to me is to trust your coaches to do the evaluations. If they are right, the team will do well. If they are wrong they will be let go and another staff will come in.

Maybe it's just me. But out of all the teams that had a bust it seems like we got shafted the most

I think the fact is all star levels have their fair share of busts. They also have their fair share that over achieve. I'll take a coaches evaluation over a star number any day. Remember coaches careers are on the line as they recruit so they will get the right person for the program and position.

I think to draw any conclusion other than Rivals doesn't really know who will make it and who will not would be foolish. They pin the stars on there along with Scout and whoever else. I put a lot of stock in it because i have no time or desire or qualification to do it myself. For me personally, i would much rather sign a bunch of 4 and 5 star players and celebrate that for what it is. But, getting into a debate as to whether it means anything other than a bunch of mouthbreathing amateurs thinking they know how to rate it is a waste of time. To me, it's just fun. That's all.

Not really. A lot more 5-stars % wise pan out than 3-stars. Some of you guys forget how many thousands of three stars there are in each recruiting class. Of course a lot will pan out because of that, but also a lot more end up "busts" and dont pan out compared to 5 and 4-stars.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Five-Star Tracker: A look at the last five years

This has a recap of the careers of 5-stars from the last 5 years. It is very informative. It's on Rivals.

Before school starts, if any of you statistics savvy students want a project to determine the truth about how much stars matter, here you go:

Take 10-20 teams that you believe are elite in the last decade, look at all of their enrollees and find the percentage of 3*, 4*, and 5* recruits that made the draft, and how high.

The hypothesis is that 3* players taken by these top programs are actually just as good as 4* players (or at least much better than average 3*'s), and that coach evals are more important than recruiting site evals. When LSU, Alabama, UF, UT, etc. takes a 3* or 2* commit, you can bet they are underrated.

Then compare the results of top program 3*'s to overall 3*'s.

This has a recap of the careers of 5-stars from the last 5 years. It is very informative. It's on Rivals.

I broke down the list from 2008-2010, here were my not-so-scientific results

Super Stars: 16
All Conference Level: 22
Solid Starters: 10
Pedestrian Players: 10
Busts: 20
Thug Busts: 20

Obviously there are some gray areas, but I think it was a pretty fair assessment. There are already some locks for Thug Busts in 2011, like Crowell and Bellamy.

If that is the case why are there far more 3 stars and under in the NFL than either 4 or 5 stars? The percentage was well over 50% the last time I saw it. That would be pretty much in line with the percentages of total players that make it in the NFL for each rating type from the total pool of players. More 3's than 4's, more 4's than 5's.

Rivals is sooo biased towards some schools, states, and player types. They give out stars like candy. No reason why T. Swoopes is a 5-star.

"thug busts" = racist

jmho

There was no racism behind it. I probably could have used a better name, but it was just a title to distinguish busts that just couldn't play ball like Chris Donald, and those that were kicked out of school/off the team like Janzen, J. Jenkins, Crowell, etc.
