Rick Stansbury has been fined $30,000 by the Southeastern Conference for his criticism of officating in his teams SEC Tournament championship game loss to Kentucky on March 14.
SEC commissioner Mike Slive was quoted as saying this in a SEC news release:
Coach Stansbury has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics. SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 clearly states that the coaches, players and support personnel shall refrain from public criticism of officials. The leagues Athletics Directors and Presidents and Chancellors have made it clear that negative public comments on officiating are not acceptable.
But perhaps the most damning quote came later that night, when he spoke with longtime Lexington Herald-Leader Kentucky beat reporter Jerry Tipton: Ive been at this a long time and one thing Ive learned: At Mississippi State, youre supposed to take it and be quiet. I had a hard time swallowing this pill because so much was at stake and my players were affected. When does the truth matter?
