Squirrel White commits to Florida State

It was a head scratcher to me as why the staff kept starting him this year. He had a spectacular season in 23 but really seemed to lose his focus and desire this season.

To me he was a good fly pattern guy that was it. On short passes he jumped while making catches for no reason, he was to small to sustain a block.

I've seen many players who were average or good but not great at one school go someplace else and flourish. Michael Penix was decent at Indiana but blew up at Washington. Dillon Gabriel was adequate at Oklahoma and was a Heisman finalist this year at Oregon. Same for Bo Nix going from Auburn to Oregon the year prior.

Not trying to start anything here, and I know the examples above are all QBs but my question is this, and not just in Squirrel's case - how much of his lack of production is a result of poor coaching? If he goes to FSU and has a stellar season next year, that could speak volumes.

So you think an FSU team that just finished the 2024 season with 2 wins has superior coaching to a team that finished 10-3 and went to the CFP?

Not necessarily about superior coaching...maybe one type of coach works with him differently than our coaches that he better understands or can work with....sometimes it is not ranking which coach is better, but which coach the player feels more comfortable with or can relate to better.

That being said, not saying that is the case here, but it is not always about which coaches are superior....or no one would have ever left Tuscaloosa.

There are a lot of reasons kids leave other than to get better coaching, (not saying you don't realize that, just making a point).

Not poor coaching per se. But exposure to quality coaching of a different eye and technique. Learn new things in a different manner, get better. It's hard for all 85-100 teenagers to be the right fit. And sometimes that's all it is.

Also seen players trasnfer and digress or end up unkown.. Goes both ways.

He wasn’t healthy last year. We’ve had some issues on offense. If FSU has a solid line, solid QB play and he’s healthy you could see him do well.

Probably got more money. Also just a year ago FSU went 13-0 before losing their bowl game. Things can change quickly. I’d say odds are we miss the playoff. Wouldn’t be shocked if FSU gets to a bowl game.
Based on our schedule and coaches track record I’ll take that bet. We make the playoffs and Nico has a far improved season. (Someone screenshot me).

I love Squirrel, but he should take better care of himself. He played with a reckless disregard for his hurt shoulder. Tough as nails, but you’re going to want to be able to lift your arm above your head after the football days are over.

Squirrel is smallish in today's world of 6'1-6'3 200+ lb WRs. Strictly a slot guy, and injury prone. I STILL HATE THIS CRAP of not knowing who will be on the team from one year to the next. No player attachment like in the past, watching a guy grow in the program, it really sucks. They have ruined the best game ever known to Man.
I hate this crap also. Going forward, coaching staff will live or die based upon their ability to shop for ( and BUY) whatever players they need in the lineup season by season. Not my idea of how the college game should be done. 🙁

Yep, and the term "student athlete" needs to be revised to "Sub Contractor". The only student athletes will be the unpaid scholarship players and walk ons. The rest major in Video Gaming anyhow..

You can’t be serious with this question. These players don’t care about coaches, teammates, or even winning or losing. They’re getting paid - he’s a got a kid I believe so it’s extremely naive to think there is another reason he left
Naive might be a strong word. Don’t get me wrong, I know money is always a factor. But what if money was close to being the same? Would you be shocked if I told you many studies/polls have shown that money isn’t always the #1 factor? People often don’t quit jobs but they quit their leaders(bosses). This is the number 1 reason people say they leave jobs, bad leadership. Peoples big reasons for leaving are feeling like they aren’t being used to their potential. I think there is most definitely something to this given our WR exodus and WR output last year. If people aren’t wondering what’s going on in the WR room, they they’re choosing to bury their head in the sand.

I'm with you. NIL plus endless transfers (transfer portal) have reduced my interest in college and even pro football.

I hear "root for the uniform not for the players going forward".

If players continue to become only loyal the NIL deals and not to schools and teams and are able leave willy nilly, won't they will be viewed as nothing more than commodities. When they viewed as commodities, like the quote from the movie, won't they become viewed as nothing more than the equipment?

I am leaning towards a totally case by case basis. I KNOW nothing about the Squirrel saga, but wonder if he was offered $ and we refused to match it . Anybody have the facts. Not matching could be a message from our staff. Could not!
