NOTES

It's a big day for the two newcomers on the offensive line as they are going to get a ton of reps with Carvin working at left guard as some of the linemen deal with some day to day bumps and bruises like Devante Brooks. Calbert was not expected to get scrimmage snaps as they continue to work him back in to contact. Same for Daniel Bituli who's limited from contact.

It's also a big day for Greg Emerson who hasn't played football in a long time.

Rain Friday night and Saturday morning left a slick surface for Tennessee's receivers, a group that had a couple of slips during routes-on-air drills with quarterbacks.

High school coaches watched the workout from the press box high above Shields-Watkins Field — Tennessee’s coaches clinic wraps up today — while the practice was open for eight minutes to reporters.

Tennessee has yet to pull the plug on any of its spring experiments in the secondary.

The Vols’ defensive backs remained in the same positions where they have worked throughout the spring, indicating that Pruitt’s staff at least wanted to see how they performed in Tennessee’s first scrimmage before making any additional changes.

Former running back Carlin Fils-aime and former safety Maleik Gray again worked at cornerback during the individual drills at the start of Saturday’s practice, while former wide receiver Tyler Byrd continued to work at safety, where he has spent most of the spring after getting a brief look at cornerback.

Both offensive line coach Will Friend and defensive line coach Tracy Rocker emphasized leverage while working with their groups on opposite ends of the field.

Jeremy Pruitt: "One thing that just jumps out to me is we have to be a much better tackling team."

Jeremy Pruitt said they had between 110-120 snaps during today’s scrimmage. Thought tackling was subpar, but liked the team’s ball security.

Jeremy Pruitt following Spring Practice No. 9 – first scrimmage: “One thing I did notice guys did not go down on first contact.”

Pruitt on how the team handled the live scrimmage today: Thought the team needed to improve its body language.

Pruitt said there were way too many penalties and that most were pre-snap penalties.

Pruitt asked if any position groups stood out today: "No."

Pruitt was asked what positives he saw today and he said that the weather was good enough to practice outside.

Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt: We ain't got nearly enough pop right now. We need some more pop out there.

Can someone please advise how long are these practices? All I can say is, it takes a lot of devotion to do what it takes to be a player and still keep up your studies.

What I like to see it the emphasis on technique, and not just hitting the crap out of each other.

Butchie would have had 4-6 guys going under the knife out by this time.

Gotta love a coach who doesn’t mind dropping a “we ain’t got” every now and then.

The telling sign will be if he is playing the same players during scrimmage 2 next Saturday, and repeating the same quotes...

The receivers need to hear: “This is a football” speech. They are treating passes like they are a dime a dozen.

What Pruitt said about our need to learn to tackle has been true for several years now.

But now we have a coach who knows how to teach them to tackle

We’re gonna need some patience here imo. It’s gonna take more than a minute to both turn around the poor tackling and, likely even longer, to turn around the defeatist attitude that this team has (referring to JP saying the team has poor body language).
