Lol get a grip. Sure butch ran a different ship and it didn’t work. Do you really think the players weren’t coached though Bc pretty sure they were. And what the hell from the clips makes it apparent they weren’t

While I agree it’s impossible to tell from the clips that they “weren’t coached” last year, there can be zero doubt given their 4-8/0-8 record and all the highly rated players who have never done much of anything here, that they were coached very well.

My opinion I think butchs problem was scheme, personnel descisions and his teaching habits. But as far as players being coached I think that’s more on position coaches. I don’t think somebody can tell me that guys like Gillespie charlton etc weren’t coaching up their guys. Some better then others obviously. And glad you agree its impossible to tell from the clips of practice

No doubt that the poor player development was a “team effort” from the staff. However, I’ve heard from more than one person who covers the team that Jones was a micromanager who interfered too much with his position coaches.

The best example is the wide receivers, which was Jones’ position group as an assistant coach. More than one guy has said that he constantly meddled with the WRs, that either Azzani or Beard would tell the guys one thing, coach em one way, and then Jones would come right behind them, say something the exact opposite, while completely confusing the kids and undermining his coach.

Recall all the confusion last year among our WRs last season.....2 plays immediately come to mind for me.....Palmer letting the DB come across his face on Florida’s goal line which resulted in a pick and the flea flicker vs Bama where all our WRs stayed in to block. There surely are many other examples.

So is it any wonder that the WR position was generally a very weak one for the majority of Jones’ time here?

Bottom line, I agree that the majority, virtually 100% of the position coaching has to come and typically does come from the assistant coaches. But the head coach sets the tone and has to let the coaches he hired do their jobs. It appears that Jones set a bad tone and didn’t let his coaches coach.

If you think these players were being coached up then you must of not been paying attention. their record indicates that they were not being coached. Penalties ,QB couldnt throw it in the ocean ,DB were constantly getting beat. Could not open a hole, could not tackle. They always looked 2-5 steps slower. Give 1 example of these players being coached up.

It does seem like the 1st couple of years under Jones, we played much tougher. We lacked talent in those first two years, but we committed few penalties and played disciplined.

Something happened after that. And I've always wondered how much Bajakian was the real secret behind Butch's success. As soon as Bajakian left, it seems like our teams started becoming much less disciplined.

DeBord was vastly superior as a playcaller imo, but the teaching and player development suffered.

Yep... I'd be skeptical of any claim that Professor Jake was our secret key to toughness in the beginning, but I do think it's notable that we saw this start to go away as all the guys Butch came in with left. The obvious exception being Gillespie, who coached the same position group for the duration of the Jones era and came out with his reputation more or less intact.

You know the good thing about spring is nobody knows how good this team is gonna be. Hope springs eternal. GBO

Best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. I've watched enough Tennessee Football, good and bad, to know what we have. This is a 6-6 team. 7-5 if we get lucky. Injuries WILL happen. Attrition WILL happen. That's why I laugh when someone says "If we can avoid injuries" because it's just not realistic. Injuries will occur and when you have little depth, it occurs more often. This is a new staff with new offensive and defensive schemes. There's always an adjustment period.
