Spring Practice #1

Who's Steen? Based off of what we saw last year, I think the offensive line might currently be the weakest unit on the team which isn't a good thing.

Tyler Steen, kid from Vandy who is being recruited currently by at least 4 SEC teams.

We are returning 4 starters. I think the line will improve in year 2.

Fingers!!!! Thank You so much for what you do year after year. Although football is months away you keep us updated on practice and the talent we have...and don't have. But, these updates are something to keep VolNation interested in our program and hope for the season to come.
Thanks again!!

Agree but center is a tough role for a freshman. And I thought Carvin was a decent backup. I was looking forward to having Nichols reach at tackle.
He could be a solid tackle I feel it’s a better idea to get him the reps now I’m not a big believer that Mays can finish an SEC game without checking out of the game for 2 quarters. Throw a lot at Nichols now that he’s here early it’ll only benefit the future of our line.

"It was Darnell Wright and Dayne Davis repping at right tackle today while JJ Crawford and Gerald Mincey were on the left side"

Interesting. I know AP mentioned that Darnell preferred to play RT. If he does stay at RT, getting Steen would be priority #1.

Davis? Please tell me this is a joke. We can’t get anyone better than Davis to rep with Wright????

Squirrel is really, really small????????

Have to remember some good players come in small packages. NFL standouts show it can happen...

Trindon Holliday (5'5" 165)
DeSean Jackson (5'10" 175)
Darren Sproles (5'6" 190)
Tyreek Hill (5'10" 185)

Not saying he can reach this class, but that just being small is not a disqualifier. Not sure where he is on his physical development timeline. adding 15 pounds to his 160 at the training table and weight room does not seem like a reach on his 5'10" frame. Easier to excel in this size range in college than the NFL. He is on my watch list, even if it takes a year or so to get there. He seems to have that uncommon vision and twitch if he can survive hits from college level defenses. Coach seemed to think he was worth the use of a counter.

I was wondering about that. Darnell seemed to do a pretty good job at LT last year, and I thought maybe the switch had been his idea to improve his future value. Interesting that he prefers RT.

IMHO the QB pressure last year frequently came up the middle not as a result of tackles getting beat (at least when Cade was healthy).

I am optimistic for our OL this year. Last year we started with only 6-7 healthy guys that were competitive - this year we should have at least 8.

The optimist in me says the staff thinks they’ll get Steen, so they’re practicing Wright at RT, knowing Steen will be the LT.

The rest I’ll give you but Sproles was built differently from the others. 190 at 5’6” isn’t that small. He was just short.

That is AFTER college..... according to the old 247 database his numbers coming out of high school were........
  • PO SRB
  • HEIGHT5-7
  • WEIGHT165
Guess they measured his height in tennis shoes............. Not projecting greatness, but don't think our staff just blindly reached into the small player pool and tagged him. Always risk/reward range is greater when you bring in guys with measurables outside the norms. Think ZZ on the BB court this year. He brings a lot and gives up things too, but like the net. Here's hoping!

Closer to home is Emmanuel Mosley. IIRC, he was under 150 lbs in hs and played cb here at around 165 early on and is now in the nfl.

Anyone have any insight into how any of the new DB's (one JUCO, Harrison, and two frosh?) are doing? Also didnt we have a transfer LB and DB?

My point is ultimately this. If we arent active in portal for DL, LB, and CB we may be in trouble.

True enough.

Met a lot of Kansas state players that cotton bowl year possibly 2001 but hell I can’t remember now. Pretty sure he was a freshman or sophomore around that time. The most hellacious ice storm had hit right before that game, most of Arkansas was an ice rink driving over it to the game.
