First off I am not a fan of our spread offense. I have always preferred the Pro-style, but whatever wins games is good with me.

The thing I have a problem with, especially in the 2nd half was our constant subbing of the WR's. If the goal is to go fast and tire out their defense that is totally reasonable.

Instead we sub WR's giving them the chance to run their extra guys out on the field and slow the tempo of our offense. I know Coach Z loves getting everybody in the game, but the up-tempo offense is pointless if the Defense gets to sub every other play. Thoughts?

I don't even know how to describe the offense. It's power running with finesse blocking. It's zone read without the read.

I sometimes refer to it as the WoBW (worst of both worlds). I usually call it the pretend-zone-read

Didn't seem like we subbed a lot. Looked to me like App st players "cramped" every other play once the O, as vanilla as it was, started moving the ball. Hopefully the play calling was just a gamble that pays off next week. The o-line though........

p.s. I prefer pro style as well

Honestly why would any Tennessee fan be happy with what we saw last night? Seriously.

We got the W.

It was week 1 and I have a feeling app state is better than a lot of people realize. Doesn't excuse our poor play, but there's always something to be said for figuring it out in the end.

I am as frustrated as you are...believe me! Dobbs is the QB that we have who gives us the best chance to win games....but he isn't really a DT qb....simply b/c he hasn't been able to throw the ball effectively. I think this O really takes off when JG takes over and then we see what this O can do when you have a qb that can consistently complete passes. Maybe Dobbs shows he can do that this season and maybe he doesn't. I hope and think he can.

I'm glad we have some depth on Defense, we would've lost this game last year. I don't understand the hurry up power run offense. usually with power running you wanna slow things down, possession, clock control are reasons that come to mind. It can be really hard on your defense if the offense isn't clicking. When we don't read with the qb you can pack it up, the offense is useless, andyou hold your breath and hope Hurd can keep taking a beating. The entire Oline needs to be reevaluated, if freshman need to be playing let them, the hell with red shirting. If this is the best Oline we have in butch's 4th year then we may be in trouble.
Also heard some D bags on the radio say that butch is only at ut because he lived off Kelly's leftovers at Cincinnati and Central Michigan

Not a lot to figure out. App State used poor clock management and their kicker is sub-par. Decent clock management and a decent kicker would = win for Appy State.

There kicker was about 10 above par. I think even if they had a bad kicker they would have still won last night

Hurd would be much better with a lead blocker, having a head of steam when he gets the ball would be much more effective. IMO
