"sportsmanship" vs. running up the score

Is running up the score unsportsmanlike?

That's one reason I hate NCAA football video games. I'll be up like 40 points on a team in the 4th and when I throw another TD pass, Herbstreit keeps saying how pointless it is and how unsportsmanlike it is. You don't know my situation? Who are you to tell me what to do and what not to do? If I score again with 8 seconds left, well, then it's not my fault your team sucks balls. Does Jesus love capitalism? No, in fact He's very much against it. However, Jesus loves it when Tennessee is able to beat Vandy 666-0. Go Vols!

I HATE WHEN KIRK *****ES LIKE THAT AFTER I GO FOR TWO WHILE BEING UP BY 30+.

I also dislike when a player gets a concussion and he rants about telling players to sit out a play to get things together and to talk to the coach or trainer.

Let the backups and especially the backup qb get playing time. If they score tuff ship. They earned the right to score and play 100%

I asked a question of another poster. You jumped in, talked junk, and repeated your opinion. The question wasn't directed to you, and you in no way answered it. Now you are complaining about my question.

Fun times on the interwebs...

It's a surprise to me too but the Bamers have their own message boards. If you don't like this one, feel free to go elsewhere.

Against most other teams/coaches, keep it classy. But against JF and Vaginabilt I run it up as high as possible. It's what those a$$holes do every time they are winning, so they deserve a taste of their own medicine.

It really depends. There's a point in the game (less than about 2 minutes) where if you have the ball you get to choose to either kneel and secure the win or throw it in order to try and score more points even if there's a chance of bad things happening to you.

In my opinion, throwing it in that situation is classless. Any amount of scoring prior to the last 2 minutes or so is fair game.

I agree with some of the above. If you have the game well out of reach, you need to play your second stringers. Let them run up the score until you see this :mf_surrender:

Kentucky called one of their timeouts in the hopes of getting the ball back with a chance to win. Down 9 with less than a min left I don't know how but anyway since they thought they could still win then Vandy should continue to score as well.

This is completely situation dictational. It depends on the level of the teams, the history of the teams, whether or not there is an advantage to scoring and finally how you define running up the score.

1. You should manage youth sports differently than college or pro sports (High School is questionable). You should also consider the level of your opponent, meaning running up the score on Austin Peay is different than running up the score on an SEC team.
2. Has this team done something to offend you, or run up the score on you in the past?
3. Do you need the style points. I believe Baylor and Ohio State should be scoring every point they possible can, because it could decide who gets in the title game should other teams stumble.
4. I think you let subs play as hard as they can, but you don't call trick plays and throw deep when the game is decided.

One thing to remember is that the kids didn't choose the schedule they play. Idaho's kids probably don't want to play Florida State this week. It's a payday for the school.
Another thing to remember is that running up the score motivates teams to seek revenge. Why add that motivation if you don't have to?

Final thought: None of my considerations for why I wouldn't run up the score apply to Vanderbilt. So hang 70 on them Butch and then refuse to shake Franklin's hand!

Voted other, have not read all responses.....

If in the past\the rivalry they haven't then I would not. If they have then yes. If they had a coach with a mouth like the Ole ball coach then yes.

Interesting subject that I have pondered myself lately. My daughter is a middle school cheerleader in 'Nooga and her school's girls b-ball team is awesome. The first game I went to it was 35-1 in the 3rd quarter...wound up like 48-5. I was a bit offended. The next few games were all about the same. Then they played a team that my cousin coaches...similar result. I spoke with my cousin after the game and asked her whatever happened to the sportsmanship thing we were taught growing up. She laughed and said that she and the other coach were friends and that they talked before the game. She said that we are so good and that her team was so bad that we could have put 100 on them if the coach wanted and that she felt we did go easy on them.

I remember back in my day (I'm 46) our coach would have made us pass it 10+ times on every possession if it was way out of hand.

Not sure what we are teaching the kids, but interesting that the opposing coach was not bothered by it.

If UT has the chance to beat these last two opponents by a wide margin then they should. It would help confidence all the way round.

I have seen us have a 16 point lead on UCLA with 4:30 left and blow it. I have seen us by 17 late against Auburn and blow it. I have seen Notre Damn up on us 34-7 and blow it. You keep SCORING until there is NO doubt. Anybody see Auburn- Georgia Saturday?

In the poll-driven world of college football, it's kind of hard to blame a coach for running up the score. Style points affect perception.

But, I prefer to see my team's scrubs come in when the result is no longer in doubt.

I do have to agree with you,it shows more class to put in the 2nd and 3rd team players and give them some playing time, rather than score some cheap "points" it looks good to us fans to beat somebody by 50 points but 21 is just as good and why do the sports reporters act like it is such a good thing too ? there is no reason to pile points on a whipped team, unless it is Bama :)
