Offensive? Get a grip. It's a school mascot get over yourself.

Actually, it's a school nickname, and it is offensive to associate that nickname with the likes of Col. Reb and Ole Miss and the civil war when it has nothing to do with that. I'm a fan of people knowing what they're talking about before they speak to the "uninformed"

I thought the nickname was also from the war with Mexico/Texas Independence, where Davey Crockett and other Tennesseans died at the Alamo.
Wasn't Sam Houston also from Tennessee?
This is exactly my thoughts. Houston was born in Virginia but was the governor of Tennessee at one point, also the governor of Texas.

Solid.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't want people to think that 'Volunteers' was just a Civil War thing.

I don't know if you are serious or not...but it's not a Civil War thing. It has nothing to do with the Civil War. It's about 1812 and also the Mexican/American War volunteers.

War of 1812, yes, and War of TX independence somewhat (Alamo, 1836)), but the 30,000 that answered the call for 2800 volunteers was the Mexican War 1846-48.

east tennessee petitioned the state govt. to allow it to secede a la west virginia. Unlike west virginia, there was no strong union army presence at the time so the governor responded by sending soldiers to occupy the area. by the time there was a strong enough union presence for this to actually work, there was no point. i believe that one county actually did secede and form its own state.hooray for civil war history with ash. one of the best classes/profs. on the ugrad side of things.

My county, Greene County, was once The State of Franklin, but that was a few decades before the Civil War.

Many of the non slave owning scots wanted to kill the union and confederate troops if they came on their land. They hated governmental intervention and in some hollers the whiskey and moonshine has turned to a different kind of growing.

Some of mine didn't want to fight anybody. But when they were told they had to join the Rebels ... they didn't like being told what to do, so they put on the blue.

I'm not so sure that counts as volunteering, what these people of mine did.

But I had some in War of 1812 and at least one at King's Mountain before that.

Mine did too. I know of 6 of my ancestors that fought in the Civil War, all Tennesseeans, but 4 with the Union and 2 Confederates.

Supposedly the told him they were going to come for him in the morning and force him to join the Confederacy. That's when he rode his horse through the night to join the Union in Kentucky.

Scott County did. I was born and raised there. We didn't even officially re join the the state of TN until 1991.

Nice. You have to love the independent mind of Tennesseeans. There was even a county or twwo from the midstate that sent delegates to the east Tennessee conferencce (the actual name escapes me) on succession. In general, the people of East Tennessee didn't identify with either side until the war actually began. There was a huge shift in the number of people who voted and there support for one side of the other once the war actually started.

I'm from there, and we also declared war on Germany before the United States. A formal peace treaty has never been signed.

Lots of good info here, really enjoy reading it. For those that care Scott County became the Independent State of Scott. Tough to find but there are some great reads about how that came to pass, and what they had to go through because of it.

If you can find it there is also some great stories about the mountain men from east TN fighting along side of Sam Houston who was a huge fan of their questionable and crude behavior.
