I'm looking to get a bit faster for track season in a month or so... is there any guaranteed way for me to do this? I haven't exercised in a while, and I'm not the strongest guy alive... I was thinking I'd have to do some more endurance stuff anyways.

Any ideas on how to improve speed?

There are some training companies that work on speed. But for do it yourself stuff try running with a parachute or dragging a tractor tire.

I used swear by plyometric boxes, deep squats (light weight x high rep / ass-to-ankle), lunges, and calf raises (once again, light weight x high rep). I would also suggest interval workouts and find a rather large stadium to run in.

Doing stuff like working on your running form, running with parachutes, building up your legs, and working on all the stuff like how you breathe, your arm swings, the lean you have when your run can all make huge differences. I'm a semi big guy (6'1 230) but my problem was that I was slow as anything but I took nearly half a second off my 40 time by dedicating my off time from lifting in an off season to all these and I went from running a 5.4 to a 4.9. It makes a whole lot bigger difference then you think. If you have the money I'd find a trainer that specializes in this.

Mickey made Rocky chase a chicken. He said it would make him faster than greased lightning and crap thunder.

Don't forget stairs!
The most strenous workout of my life occurred while in school at UT.

Start at Stokely Athletic Center

Run down Lake Loudon Avenue to Neyland Drive

Take Neyland Drive to Hill Street

Run up Hill Street to Main (Cumberland)

Main to Gay

Cross the Gay St. Bridge

Run up the steep old stairs behind the Shriner Building

Run up Mimosa Street to the very top of the hill and then back down the backside (there are two sets of apartment communities on the backside)

Run to Henley Street and over the Henley Street Bridge and take the loop to the right back down to Neyland

Neyland back to Lake Loudon

Lake Loudon to Todd Helton

Todd Helton to Neyland Stadium

Finish with 20 minutes of upperdeck bleachers in Neyland

This run is the only time in my life I have ever experienced a "runners high". Shortly after the Neyland bleachers, I had a fun little bout of vertigo, vomited a few times, and generally felt terrible for the next day.

3x 100yrd traveling lunges 4x 400yd sprints then 3x squats(about 175lbs) 20 times. Knocked down my 40 time immensely.
