Speculating on softball turnover

why Taylor fell off the bat and G Aucoin couldn't get a call at the plate is a mystery to me! They started the season on fire!

Collegiate softball coaches and their leagues should petition the NCAA for more scholarships. It is absolutely stupid to give basketball 15 scholarships--that is three full teams!--while softball, which has more than DOUBLE the starters--has only 11.5 (right number?). Most basketball teams rarely have more than 12/13 players on the team--and rarely play more than 9 or 10. The NCAA ought to take at least 4 scholarships away from basketball and give 2 to softball and 2 to soccer--another sport with lots of players. I was on a softball forum and somebody wrote that auburn and arksansas had 30+ players on their softball rosters. Doesn't seem possible, or practical, at all, but that's what the poster said. Its the hyper-competitiveness of the SEC. Sometimes I like it but it's also crazy--starting with football!

Aucoin's difficulties really hurt in the long run. Gabriel made great progress this year but still stamina seemed an issue and she was very much up and down, and with Aucoin unable to throw strikes the Vols had to pitch Gaffin a LOT this year. Gaffin could probably be an even better position player if she could just concentrate on that and not have think about pitching, too. Maybe that will be the case next year, though given how dependable Gaffin was we'll surely see her on the mound. I'm sure the coaches will work with Aucoin, who as we know is a pretty good hitter as well.

armchair, great! Maybe we'll get to keep all the returning walk-ones on the team next yr. Good for them if that's the case! I just thought a roster w/ 20+ players is crazy and impractical, but let's go SEC! We are ready for it..

Taylor Koenig and Annie Aldrete both gone to Cal. (Announced by Koenig on Instagram) Good luck to them. Wish nothing but the best and appreciate everything they did for the Big Orange for the past 2 yrs.

Even with these two transfers I think the team will be much better next season. We certainly have recruited players that can step right in and take the positions in question.

Both Aldrete and Koenig struggled a lot during the postseason play/in the month of May: Aldrete hit .195 (8/41, O HR's) and Koenig hit just .0910 (2/22, 0 HR's). In SEC play, Aldrete posted .286 batting average (18/63) w/ 6 HR's whereas Koenig hit .255 (13/51) with 5 HR's. These numbers are definitely replaceable, but what we'll be missing in the case of Adlrete is her leadership quality, experience and presence on the field. Aldrete was usually gracious and thoughtful in her interviews as well.

We have lost our best hitter and our best power hitter, who admittedly couldn't hit a lick the last half of the season. They are big losses. I don't wish them the best because they've quit on the team and the coaches--and screwed up their college experience and college career, but that is their decision.

Aldrete was National Freshman of the Year and she will be sorely missed but I believe opposing pitchers learned her tendencies and weaknesses. She routinely got behind in the count and then swung at bad pitches. (I think she'll eventually get past that-it is difficult to live up to a season like that.) Also, I think Ralph jumped all over her when she made that poor decision to throw down to second and let the run score I think against Florida in the WCWS as he should have done. As far as Koenig is concerned-best of luck.

I don't feel that way about them. Hope they have good careers and find happiness. I'd like to play against them next year and beat them but Cal has a good program. Do softball transfers have to sit a year?

I'm not sure if Aldrete was our best hitter. Aldrete had a phenomenal freshman season, and thereby generated a lot of publicity for herself and the program. But based on the productivity of the most recent season alone, both Meghan Gregg and Megan Geer, two of our better hitters on the team posted better numbers; Gregg batted .302 w/ 3 HR's in SEC play. She posted .292 with 3 HRs in the all-important postseason play. On the other hand, Geer posted .300 batting average w/ 4 HR's in SEC play. She batted .263 w/ 3 HR's in the postseason series. Their numbers are all better than Aldrete's. In the 12 game postseason play, even Lexi Overstreet had a better number at .323 (1HR) than either Aldrete or Koenig. I don't have RBI's, Runs, etc, but IMHO, Aldrete overall was no better than 3rd or 4th best hitter in our lineup. At the end of season, I'd much rather have Overstreet bat at the plate rather than Aldrete in clutch situations...

Neither of those players were our best hitter. Gregg was better than both for the season. I'll be glad to go on record right now and we can check in a year and say Tennessee will win more games than this season. Vines and Leach will easily take up the slack in hitting.
I wish them the best no reason to hold a grudge.

So is every player who's ever transferred from a team a quitter? How are they screwing up their college experience by leaving somewhere they don't want to be? It's their experience and career, not yours. They don't have to please you. Maybe if you got off your judgmental high horse you'd realize that.

You are seriously an incredibly misinformed human being. And that's putting it nicely.

A lot of players who transfer don't seem to ever achieve the success they had before they transferred. For instance like when Spigner transferred. She was upset she was going to be a DP and not play in the field. However, when she transferred she got a lot less playing time and ended up being a DP alot. A lot of the times players are listening to "experts" when they should be listening to their coaches.
