I heard on sports talk (insert joke here) that at the end of practice we kicked FG and only hit 3 and some were blocked! WTheck! How hard is it to block for a FG? Can we go a whole game and just not kick one?... :hi:

Well it is very difficult with the size disadvantage we have inside.
Sullins each are no bigger than 270 and the Long snapper is 200.
So what do you think is gonna happen when 6-5 375 pound cody tries to barrel some one 6-1 270

it has to be more than blocking though. maybe timing, foot-planting issues, trajectories too low. not sure, but we must get this right because VT lives and dies by special teams!

We'll just have to score TDs.

Yep. We can't afford to attempt FG's. Expect snaps on 4th downs if we're inside the 30 yard line and fail to convert.

Palardy WILL fix this. However in the bowl game VT will score pts on special teams (likely a blocked kick) and we will need to be very good in the other two phases of the game to overcome it. I have no doubt we can overcome it, but I also have no doubt we will give a score up like that...if somehow we avoid that we win by 7+

Was Gran just a recruiter? His special teams sucked all year. Palardy will fix the kicking part and the Tampa Bay ST coach will fix the rest (should be able to recruit South Florida as well!) :crossfingers:

I looked it up and Va Tech hasnt blocked a kick this year from what I seen.Remember Fulmer is gone. The days of us going into bowl games and getting our arse handed to us are over. I would bet that we do the arse handing this year.34-17 Vols.GBO.

there are articles on rivals, scout, and govolsxtra saying that we had 4 straight missed field goals to end practice, two of which were blocked. paraphrasing, kiffin said its not the way he wanted to end practice, but he wasnt going to keep them out there missing kicks and getting them blocked. then, i quote, "i guess we'll just go for it." lane, you have my full support, 4 down territory anywhere past their 40 yd line. dont kick it....just go.

Not getting the ball up high enough over the Dline. If you kick it low you can get more distance but it stands a chance of getting blocked. I would bet my bottom dollar that VT has studied those blocked field goals and will try to duplicate bama's success on the inside. They say the problem is injury related. Hopefully thats the case and his lift will be improved for the game.

That doesn't sound good to me.

Kickoffs & punts could be a problem too, they had three different players return kicks for scores. I hope we kick it high on punts & to the up-back on kickoffs. Justin Colquitt and James Wilhoit would be nice to have for this game.

We blocked punt against Miami and returned it for a TD.

I do think though that our best ST weapon this year is our kick-off return team. David Wilson and Dyrell Roberts seem to be lights out if they can get a seem.

How is your kick-off coverage?

our best bet is if Lane can somehow convince Beamer to agree to just take it at the 30yd line every time. I'm hoping he's a good salesman

Might be a good deal.

Our kick-off team is one of the units I have the most confidence in. In our loss to GT, the only reason the game was even close was because we kept giving the ball to our offense on like the 40 and 50 yard lines.

I think it will be important for VT's offense to get the ball around the 40 or 50 yard lines to have a chance to put up points against your defense.

I expect to see us fake a FG on the Hokies. What better way to set it up than to get the other team salivating for a block?

It isn't the blocking that kills us on FGs. It isn't good by any means, but you can't expect to hit a mid-range to long-range FG when you kick it 5 feet off of the ground.

I'd say 7 3/4. Let's be realistic here. :)

Doesn't matter whether it was 4" or 8" he kicked it. When you are trying to get it over a jumping behemoth that was, what, 6'8", I would imagine it better be 10" or higher when it crosses the line of scrimmage. He can probably reach 9" standing flatfooted. If Lincoln can't get it fixed, Palardy will by next year. As far as the bowl game, we are actually better set up right now as far as film is concerned to pull the fake punt than the fake FG. Look how slow Cunninghams release is. You can count on Beamer bringing them on him. It would set up a fake screen to the TE quite beautifully(if Chad can throw it). Other than that, I say Kiffin goes for it (at least once, maybe more)if we are in 4th and short in mid-long fg range.
