Special teams upgrades

Yeah, nothing made me madder than when Nuke would drop the ball last year.

I fully expect to see either Meline, Oku, Jackson, or maybe even Rogers to take the return responsibilities. This year, field position has got to be on our side.

I'm just excited about Palardy and Darr. I can't wait to see them boot some deep ones.

I'm very excited about Palardy and Darr as well.
Something inside me would love for Lincoln to have an opportunity to win a big game and totally redeem himself.

I counted out Lincoln his sophomore year. And I counted out Cunningham the day he was born, when his last name wasn't Colquitte.

Blow what? His kick versus Alabama was not low. There was just an amazingly athletic 340 lb man by the name of Cody who had some great ups.

You must have been watching another game. Plus he admitted later he tweaked his leg and should have told the coach.

I don't see how height is that big of a factor. Shorter guys can typically get to top-speed faster than long legged guys( see Brandon James). If Hunter gets his long legs churning, BYE BYE!!!

I will settle for a guy who can just catch the ball cleanly.

Seems like the shorter guys can have a little better 'shake' to make the first guy miss, but that's just a generality that doesn't matter when talking about a specific guy. I think that good returners have to have that knack for seeing the field and the pattern of the coverage more than anything else. Of course, they have to be physically capable, too. The very best ones are the ones that have that knack and the blazing speed to go with it.

But absolutely, we need a guy who can always catch it. Guess that's the first requirement - I know we all cringed last year when Nuke settled under one.

Hate to belabor the point, but I've wondered about all of that. The kick was definitely low and that was the primary reason it was blocked for sure. But Cody did get some penetration, too (the 1/2 inch vertical didn't do it, I agree.). I just can't understand for the life of me why you try to block a 340 lb'er with a 260 lb'er in that situation at all, much less after he's already blocked one.

Surely we had a 300+ lb'er on the team who could essentially just get as low as possible and hold his ground against Cody. Unlike the guard for normal offensive plays, the guys doesn't have to be particularly athletic and doesn't have to know much of anything - doesn't take long to get a guy ready. Mass really matters in that instance and I never understood why we didn't have a different guy in there all the time. Might not have mattered, but struck me as a bad coaching move, regardless.

Really hope that we can turn our ST's around - could be the one area that we can be much, much better than last year. There is obviously potential to do so - we have been really terrible the last 3-4 years.

I'm encouraged by CER and CDD's history of ST performance. But after feeling hopeful for several years with consistently bad results, I'll believe it when I see it on the field.

GBO!

Yeah, I'm not calling for a kickers head just because of one missed kick. It's been the past two years of suckage from Lincoln. He did so well his freshman year, and then fell apart. Palardy should win the starting job without even trying.

And Palardy's leg is so strong, he would have kicked the ball straight through Cody's belly....hahaha.

Okay, maybe not, but that would have been an epic field goal.

Good point about shorter guys having that first move. After waiting on a block, vertically challenged guys seem to accelerate better also

Track guys are taught to run with their head up. Combine that with being 6'4" and Hunter should be able to see the field. Anticipating a hole opening up is something that can't be taught. It's a gift.

Agreed on the anticipation being a gift - that's what I really meant by seeing the field and patterns of coverage. If the physical attributes are anywhere close between two guys, that anticipation is what matters. So I think the best guy on a particular team in that regard is likely to be the best returner even if he's not hardly as quick/fast, etc. Seems like I can remember Dale Carter taking a few to the house and wasn't he 6'3" or something?

Now if you take the 10 best returners in the country (who all have good anticipation), you might start seeing some patterns regarding their height, etc.

I just hope Darr doesn't play much.

I have a feeling he will break a sweat. Darr is a great name for everyone to scream. It should be yelled at the top of your lungs, just as he makes contact with the ball.

DARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
