Speaking of bad calls, why didn't we get

he was absolutely running backwards to avoid the pressure. Just making contact doesn't end the play. I've seen lots spin out of it and go forward

I also said I didn't believe it was a safety but of course just ignore that

He was running mainly sideways and a little backwards. He was contacted outside of the endzone and pushed into it.

the safety when we sacked Rogers in the end zone? Go back and watch it close. His knee did not touch at the 1 yard line. It was close but it was a safety.
Dooley should have challenged it if it was possible on that play, I don't know.

Did you see the replay of that penalty? It was the right call. Freaking Poole Grabed the facemask and pulled a few times.

Yeah I said it wasn't a bad call. Just not one that you ever see get called. Refs usually let the runningback get away with that.

First let me say the correct call was made. With that said I have little doubt that if untouched his own momentum takes him into the endzone.

"The runner's forward progress toward the opponents' goal line is stopped by contact with an opponent, with little chance to be resumed. The exact moment at which the player's forward progress stops is subject to the judgment of the officials. In particular, for the protection of the quarterback, he is considered down as soon as an official judges that he is in the grasp of an opponent behind the line of scrimmage, and the tackling defensive player(s) will be awarded with a sack. If he is driven backward by the opponent, the ball will be spotted where his forward progress was stopped."

Rogers was not down, however, he had no chance of advancing the ball. therefore the play was called dead when he was pushed down beginning at the 1 yard line and falling backwards into the end zone.
so the result was dead ball at the 1. A correct call even though I would have loved to have the safety.

How about the holding call on Bartholomew on our last drive in regulation? Looked like a text book block to me.
...and vandy was BLATANTLY holding ALL night. Heck, I'm not even sure that I understand one of the simplest rules in FB anymore. I see it constantly, it's rarely called and then they call crap like THAT. Go figure

I agree. I think he was on his way to running into the endzone but he was contacted before he got there.

Anyway, everyone knows that if it is borderline, the refs will mark it out of the endzone. It has to be clear to call it a safety.

As far as a challenge, every play is reviewed. If the replay official had thought the spot was wrong, and it was indeed a safety, he was obligated to buzz the field. A challenge should not be necessary.

Offensive Facemask is a fairly uncalled penalty two. Not saying it was a bad call but stiff arms are rarely called facemasks.

I have been playing and watching football for a very long time... I have never seen that call before.

Making contact doesn't end the play, but in the event the contact causes a tackle, the ball is spotted at the point of farthest forward progress during the tackle itself. Since the tackle was initiated as he was outside the endzone, the spot of the ball would be where the contact was initiated. It would be no difference if he was contacted in the endzone but fell forward into the field of play.
