-W. Better than and L and though iffy at times, game wasn't in doubt and wasn't like a UAB OT game.
-Nebraska beat Mcneese St by 7 today and are top 20. Navy was all over top 5 OSU last week without passing the ball. There are more and more good players and the spread opens up the game predicated on space. If you have a good mobile qb like they had, you are usually in games.
-Elder needs to wake up and instead of watching Victor Brown type missiles on KO coverage, it looks like we lollygag down in our lanes, try to play it safe and absorb blocks. Not sure if that is due to what we are teaching or because ST's are loaded with young guys or a combination
-OL is young and Hurd is a true freshmen. And people are talking about not being impressed. Again, this isn't a video game and he's 18. That kind of talk makes you look ridiculous.
-Speaking of ridiculous, have a few cocktails and go read the game thread. There you will find your list of people you don't want to be with in a sticky situation.
-We need more Worley under center with the single back. We ran it well today from that formation. These read option runs are too slow and the Defense basically just sends 6 between the tackles where the rb is headed. Something has to change. A toss sweep for goodness sakes. A basic quick counter. A straight up Jay Graham off tackle. We have no room in between the tackles and have no plays, outside of the Pig sweep that we held off running today for obvious reasons, that get our rbs outside of the tackles in space.
-We didn't run any screens today or the fly sweep. I know some of you and I as well are questioning Bajak right now, but its still early with a young team and new OL. We kept it vanilla as we could and packed it in early after a hot day where we lost a few players.
-next week is gonna suck, but I can handle it. Can you?

2-0, with many areas to improve and plenty of room to do it.

Agree in theory and this is my only real concern with CBJ or his offense. Almost all of our runs are slow developing and we don't fire off on the snap.

Glad Worley has been as accurate as he has.

If we use the screen game we win by 21 more points. Running the ball is very important of course but our extended run game is the Manning/Brady dink and dunk in space....saw it all last Sunday but not today. We didn't need to go deep into our play book for this team. Save it for next week.

Also thought if we could get Patches O'houllihan to throw some wrenches at the OL's and make them get mean and play angry in the run game...might help...

What I took from this game was that UT is massively screwed when teams power run the football on us. We have no depth at DT, and our guys were gased come the 4th quarter. Offense has to step up, and Mike Baj. has to get the deep ball going. Also, please do whatever it takes to get North the ball. North may be the best WR we have had here since PP. That kid doesn't miss catches, and hes unguardable in the endzone. Mike Baj. I'll also continue to say this as well, PLEASE FEED THE PIG. Get PIG the ball as much as possible and let him make some plays for us.

Two big concerns for me going forward. First, our o-line sucks. I think coaching and recruiting for our O-line is lacking all around. Paging Sam Pittman? Also, at this point, Richmond is our one true hope of having a great LT prospect next season. I just simply didn't see much improvement today from our o-line. There's just no real push, and I'm sorry to be so blunt about us sucking so bad but geez oh peat we are screwed if we can't run the football come next Saturday. We also have to call a better run game. There's no threat in our run game. Switch it up, go strong set, IDC, just quit running the read option over and over. ITS NOT WORKING.

The second biggest issue I see is our special teams. Our special teams in terms of returning the ball is horrid. We have to do a better job on special teams.

Good summary. I don't understand the mentality of our fans. The general sentiment is that we are a 6-6 team but then they act disappointed when we play that way. We will beat Chatt, Mizzou, Ky and Vandy and go to a bowl.

Saving the screen for next week. That'll help with run game as well.

I don't expect the playbook to open up until Georgia. Yeah, OK is tough and we'll see a few twists and the D will play balls to the wall. But they're not in the SEC, and unless it should by some miracle be close at the half, we'll continue to see this kind of offense. It's SEC play where bUTch has to have every advantage he can give this young team.

That's chicken s@@@. You play to win, not conserve the play calling like a fat guy does with the last jar of cookies in his parents home.

Won't really matter. It will quickly unravel against the Sooners. They are simply a much, much better team. We need to pray we hold them under 50. OU will have all day to pass with the pass rush we have shown to date against 2nd tier football teams.

Can we add an appreciation for 3rd Down for What? 17-22 so far.

yes, forgot about that. Teams, though not the best teams, are 5-22 on 3rd down for Whats. Somebody earlier mentioned 3rd and Chavis and another poster mentioned how other teams were converting one after another, and neither is accurate.

No, that's managing a team to a double digit win on a 100 degree field with a big and tough road game next week and an already thinning and young OL/TE/DE

One thing I feel good about-- I knew we'd be a bit flat today, but I still never had any concerns about losing. I knew Butch would get us to the W. That hasn't been true the last several years-- including CPF later years.

Why show up then? We don't need to back down and play passive. We won't win the game, but we can avoid getting embarrassed by doing more then running read options to the same side of the field nearly ever run play. Depth and youth isn't an excuse for piss poor game calling and lack of effort. We have the effort this year, but do we have the play calling on offense? Idk the answer to that, but I can tell you had we played OK today we'd lost by 20+. Our defense can't be on the field over and over again with no break, so you either open up the offense or get embarrassed on national TV and watch the VolNation melt down occur.

P. S. Spart, I think me and you were talking about two different games. I'm not talking about today but rather saving plays until Ga game. You can't go to OK and not try to win the game.

so you think the same 10 plays and gameplan will be in store for next week I guess.
It will be a shame if that's the case.

edit..saw your edit. That's my fault. I didn't see the Ga mention.

Though I will grant there are personnel and coaching differences between the 2013 Arkansas State and 2014 Arkansas State teams:

Auburn played them last year. They gave up 422 yards on 80 plays (4.22ypp) and 9 points and put up 468 on 69 (6.7ypp) and put up 38 points.

Tennessee gave up 331 on 78 plays (4.24ypp) and gave up 18 points and put up 415 on 83 plays (5ypp) and put up 34 points.

Would we have liked to have seen a better performance from our OL? Absolutely. Would we have liked to have seen Worley hook up on those deep passes? Absolutely. But just temper your expectations given the SEC Champion and NCG runners up didn't outright dominate Arkansas State either.

I'm not comparing UT to Auburn from last year but just remember that Auburn pretty much hit their average ypc against a very sub-par defense compared to LSU and Alabama. I work with quite a few Auburn grads and they were, last year, saying the same things we are. "OL didn't dominate a mid-major, LSU and Alabama are going to destroy us" etc.

Note: I do think we'll struggle mightily to hit 3-4ypc against most SEC caliber defenses.

Also, band was much better today. Inclusion of Game of Thrones theme!

They played it last week too.

One thing id like is for Worley to throw the ball to where are recievers can make a better play on the ball. Often times he would throw the ball too far inside where the db was. He needs to keep it where either our guy can catch it or nobody can, not isnide where the db can make a play on the ball

Other than that, overall good game by #14

This was a trap game with an early kickoff and a young team and by end of first half game was pretty much over.

Did you notice almost from when we went up 31-12, we basically ran on 1st and second down and only passed on 3rd when we tried to keep drive alive?

My assumption now is we are going to do a lot more passing on 1st down for next few games. I mean we were as vanilla as possible for entire second half.

After we got 31, literally did not go for the kill... just ran clock.

I am ok with that and this young team. I was much more worried about this game then Utah St.

With you on the North comments. He's outstanding athletically and has great hands. He's virtually automatic when thrown to. However, couldn't disagree more about Pig. He's only a complimentary, "close to the line of scrimmage" type receiver....he should never be the focal point of the passing game/offense, and they should never, ever throw to him deep given the much bigger, much better WR options that we have. Give him 4-5 touches, let him get his 30-35 yds to contribute to the team and look to North, Smith, Croom, Malone and hopefully Pearson for the big, explosive plays.
