Southern Miss may be a tough game

Their qb was 11-19, I think with barely over a hundred yards against UT-Martin. I know we should respect all opponents, but maybe we are overdoing it.

I tend to agree with this. As you implied, SMU is probably solid for what they are, and God knows after last weekend, every major program is hearing about parity in college ball. But I also think a disappointing loss (such as ours in the opener) lends itself to a bit of over-worry. After losing to Cal, I guarantee you there is no foe small enough that there won't be numerous threads/posts about why we're likely to trip up. As I see it, the Vols are about as unlikely as any team could be to be overconfident this week. If we win by less than 2 TD's, I'll be very surprised.

SMU is not USM.

That's all I have to say. Looking forward to the game this Saturday - will be my first trip to 'Rocky Top.'

athletic dislexia...I was diagnosed years ago. :birgits_giggle:

Heh - I know the feeling.

I see so many people call Southern Miss SMU, though, because I guess they think, instinctively, that it's Southern Miss University or something, instead of University of Southern Mississippi.

pretty big difference, though...sorry, my bad! Meant no disrespect to the Eagles; I know they are a formidable foe, but I have to believe the Vols are ready to take some spank out on somebody. Home opener, too...I think you guys may be in the wrong place at the wrong time come Saturday...

i have been screaming this all week. They will take on anyone, anywhere....last year beat NC state, played Auburn, Va Tech. They (coaches and players) learn from everyone of those and get more desensitized to large crowds. That is what takes most smaller schools out of "their" game, is the atmosphere and intensity of a 12th man. Neyland will not phase them, they will be anxious, but I would not doubt they willl settle in and play two strong quarters against us. We will wear them down though.

Tennessee 38 S. Mississippi 16

I'm thinking that he was not disputing that they may very well be, but that he was suggesting that a discussion over who is the best football team in mississippi is akin to discussing who is the best NFL team in Michigan. :lolabove:

And what a profound statement this is. Sorry but this makes me :post-4-1090547912:. I know they are no pushover, but come on. Best in Miss.. :whistling:

That isn't a very good compliment. With the two SEC bottom dwellers up north, that is like saying we are the fastest guy at the special olympics :birgits_giggle:

It's a known fact that MSU and Ole Miss will not play USM

They are the best program in that state

look at Middle Tennessee State....keep it up, (2nd quarter) there are some weaknesses in the top 10 shown this week (louisville#8?)

USM will bring their A game. They have secondary not a great one. You will break some runs, but I am willing to bet that the defensive secondary may be one of the top 5 fastest you will see all year. We have some holes, but defense collapses very fast. I look forward to a good game, and hope to see a Tenn. defense like I saw in the Cal game.

as for the best team in the state, when the sisters up north run away when we offer to play them at home something is up. the only time State wants to follow Ole Miss, is when it comes to USM. State's AD said he won't play USM until Ole Miss agrees to. Yes State and Ole Miss are in the SEC but the sad thing is they couldn't even win CUSA

I'm very excited to see this matchup tomorrow. A win tomorrow will do a lot for our confidence. I want our team confident going into the Boise State game with an undefeated record. I truly hope that USM can do what Rutgers did last year, except not lose and be a BCS spoiler.
