nah, i think the run is what is going to make hay in gainesville. We will pound it and let that open up the field.

You may be right, but my sense is that Florida has plenty of speed and athleticisim on the D line and that running right at them is not the best attack. The secondary's inexperience makes them much more vulnerable to routes designed to screw up our coverages.

But, and let's assume I'm right, if the best plan is to throw against Florida then I would therefore fully expect Fulmer to run, run, run.

You're exaclty right on that second point. As to the first, unless UTK develops some down the field threats quickly I have a feeling your defense is good enough to hold the Vols under 20. I was also impressed by UGA's defensive performance against the vaunted OkieState offense. I'm feeling better and better about predicting the Dawgs to win the East this year.

I have to laugh - this opening post in this thread (which I totally agree with BTW) is written by the same guy who started the thread discussing whether UT should sit a banged-up Ainge and play Crompton this weekend, which of course opened the floodgates of "if the score gets lopsided..."

You are absolutely right to call shenanigans on me about that. When I posted the thread about sitting Ainge to rest, I was in that mindset that USM is simply not much of a threat. The thread I started today on this subject came later, after I had looked up the expectations for USM.

Fair enough, Law! Honestly, I knew our that each of our first three games were going to be tough, but now... (after our game vs. Cal and the other UT's game vs. Ark St.), I'm revising that to our first 4 - well, heck, then comes GA - then an open date - phew!

Yeah, UT has it rough right out of the gate. No doubt about that. You should have a pretty good grasp on where you are by the end of September.

Florida has two tough tests this month -- UT and Auburn. But both at home. That game at LSU is looming as a potentially epic contest if things shake out as indicated on paper.

USM has fatal flaws on both sides of the ball. On offense, despite the fact they lean heavily on the run, their interior OL sucks bad. On defense, they have little to no secondary. Hopefully we can stuff their run and force them to pass it. On offense, we should be able to hurt them with the pass and then cut them with the run when they drop back.

I'm not buying into the tough game hype. yeh 1st half will be a little rouch but Ainge, Foster, and Coker are going to eat that D alive.

I don't know what kind of return game USM has but our kicking game may have been as bad as our defense. Anyone notice our short kickoffs with no hangtime and is BC's injury still a concern?

Every team who comes to Neyland stadium to play us brings their A game. Except maybe Cal last year.....

Air Force last year was a totally and completely FOCUSED and DETERMINED team.

Remember in like 03 or 04 when we played Marshall to the 4th quarter? They brought their A game.

People WANT to beat Tennessee at Neyland. It is a huge goal for everyone playing us at home, especially out of conference teams.

If you think Southern Miss wont be totally prepared to play and compete, you are just plain retarded.

The Vols need to win and win big this week against USM. I live down here in Gatorland and the Gator's are looking at the Tennessee game as a stage to make their case for #1.We need to go into this game with some renewed confidence.

I like all hope for a win, but any team that tackles so poorly they label it over pursuit instead of absent fundamental tackling skills is subject to earn a L angainst anybody.

Way to fan the flames LG. Florida plays Troy. Troy has a very good pass rush. Some of the best DEs around. They almost beat FSU at FSU. Go worry about them and precious Timmy Tebow's throwing mechanics

Nice thought, but I dont see UT stuffing anybody's run. As far as their running back goes, if he's elusive and can make people miss, he's playing the perfect defense.

Conference USA occasionally has a decent team. I think Steve Kragthorpe at Tulsa had a team that cracked the top 25 a couple of years ago.

That said, in 05 when UT was falling apart, they still managed to beat Memphis and UAB. So I expect a win, just not an easy game.

If we lose this game, the wheels have officially come off.

Glad I continued reading this thread into the third page because I was getting ready to post the same thing. If our defense doesn't learn how to tackle this and next week, all this talk will be moot and we're in for a long year....

Hey guys, I'm still around.

I will agree with you that the o-line, passing game, and secondary are our weaknesses. We lost almost the entire O-line to graduation last year and have a lot of young guys up front. They did a good job of run blocking last weekend, but got pushed around while pass blocking. Our running game is definitely our strength. Young is an inconsistent passer, but can hurt you with his legs. I think a lot of the passing game woes were from a combination of rain, new receivers, and first game jitters (not saying that it will improve by leaps and bounds either). The stats from last weekend are a little misleading. It rained for half of the game, and we were also playing UT Martin so we didn't really have to open up the play book. Our secondary is the weakness on D. We have a freshman starting at one corner, but moved a really good athlete from safety to corner on the other (Brandon Sumrall - he will be in the NFL next year).

I will not say that we deserve a ton of respect from you guys, but I will say that we are not a push over. I think it will be a good game that could go either way.

UT fans - the USM QB was only 11 for 27, sure, but guess what? He's a mobile QB who is a running threat.

That last sentence should strike fear in all of us, knowing our history with mobile QBs.

No offense but.....

The only way USM wins this game is if UT's defense goes limp wristed like they did against Cal. I respect USM but you guys are nothing special. Go celebrate that big victory over UT-Martin

crap...if their coach has a lick of sense he has probably been all over the air force tape and put in an option package if they didn't already have one. if so then we could be in real trouble...like when we face Florida's spread option.
