How many years until we play for national title now? I say 3...
and we are playing for all the marbles. Within 5 years we should be playing for all the marbles once every 3-4 years. After 4 years it will be be incredibly RARE when we are not in a BCS Bowl!

Didn't they play this same tune when Holtz was hired?

(Quoted from another of my posts. . . .)

Kinda funny reading the posts on GamecockCentral. Everyone is jumping up and down, laughing at Florida, and buying up all the champagne in Columbia (which probably equals about, errr, 10 bottles. . . .and it's Cook's) to celebrate the upcoming National Championship in 2005.

Wait a minute, last I checked, ONE legend couldn't get it done there. What makes them think that Spurrier is going to be their Salvation? I mean, fine to get a little excited about the next year(s), but ESPN is running a "How many years until Spurrier takes SC to the Promised Land (BCS Bowl)?" poll. Get a friggin clue.

Everyone knows that there are 2 classes of football teams in the East -- three teams in each. And, everyone in the SEC knows that South Carolina better be happy that they aren't sitting below Vandy and Kentucky at the time being. It wasn't long ago, though, and remember -- times can change.

Florida will return to being a great football team, Georgia is strong, and Tennessee has tradition (not to mention a lot of young talent). I'd suggest to the Cocky faithful, how 'bout focusing on trying to get out of the bottom half of the SEC standings, then maybe we'll talk about Bowl games.

You're exactly right - this is a carbon copy of the Holtz hire, and that hasn't quite worked as well as they hoped. I commend them for making a bold move, but I don't think it's a slam dunk that SC will immediately become a 9+ win team. Even if they do improve a game or two. They are going to find out that you can be a pretty good team and still finish 3rd or 4th in the SEC East.

Nobody seems to notice that Spurrier is 60 and at best will probably only coach for 3-5 years; barely long enough to get a team of his own recruits.

..and don't think that if they go 7-4 a couple of times, Steve won't lose interest and do the same thing to SC that he did to the Redskins.

Is South Carolina becoming an old coach graveyard or what??He will probably do slightly better with the Cocks than he did with the Skins!! B)

Even Trev Alberts (Or, douchebagosaurus rex as I like to call him) is saying a 10 win season in 3 years or so is the best they can hope for.

I'm not so sure they can get to 10 wins. Only if all the stars and planets align just perfectly.

What's funny about some of the posts from the SC boards is that they really think he is going to do better than he did at Florida.

As Trev said, best they can hope for. I think a 10 win season one time in the next five years is a possibility. Spurrier will bring better recruiting attention to the Gamecocks, that's for sure.

They sound a lot like the Dallas Cowboy fans did when Bill Parcells was hired as head coach for them over a year ago. I had Cowboys fans tell me, after Parcells was first hired, "Bill Parcells is taking us to the Superbowl this year." He has little improved them. I think this will be the story with Spurrier and SC.

Although they did greatly exceed common expectations. I am a 'Boys fan myself, and was exstatic about even a playoff appearance.

Now that Spurrier is officially a Cock ( hard to say without laughing), do the USC fans really believe that he will still be able to get the same level of talent out of Florida ? Please.

AT UF he had an All American pipeline. That will dry up.

UGA, Clemson, UT and UF will be hard to recruit against. His system won’t work with C and D level players.

South Carolina has some decent talent but not like Florida.

I think the big difference is that SC will probably stop losing games that they shouldn't like against Ole Miss this year. Anything more than that is gravy.

People are acting like Lou Holtz couldn't coach??????

You are probably right GAVol.

Remember when everyone was saying how he out-schemed us last year?

SportCenter opened up with the USC story. First thing that was said “ Have we ever opened up with a story on South Carolina?”

Exactly - Wasn't it just a couple of weeks ago that the same people were picking SC to beat us because Lou Holtz had an off week to prepare?

They really didn't think SC was gonna win....just wishful thinking on their part.

Kirk Herbstreit just said that SC will be "competing for the SEC Championship in three years." Corso doesn't believe Spurrier will do much of anything there.

And I thought Herbstreit was the level headed one.

Oh believe me . . . they thought they were going to beat us.

I have some experience with SC fans since my company's home office is about a mile from Williams-Brice Stadium. In general they are nice people, but they ARE the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

You gotta give them credit though for going after and getting the old ball coach (don't you hate that reference?).

I have been to SC for a couple of Vols games and the fans weren't too bad. Or maybe I was just lucky and avoided the crazy ones.
