Sources: UT Athletics Mulling New Apparel Deal With Adidas

Hey @DeerPark12, it looks like we finally got licensed w/ Rhoback. I was wondering if you could tell me why certain companies like Johnnie-O, Peter Millar or Turtelson only use certain logos from Tennessee. Peter Millar and Volunteer Traditions can use the interlocking UT, but Johnnie-O has the Power T and old logo of Smokey. Wasn’t sure if there is a protocol for that

There are two types of logos to be licensed, current and College Vault. A company buys a license for either (or both). The current logos are the Power T, the baseball script "Vols," the Lady Vols T and the "Tennessee" wordmark. Nike has an exclusive on the "VOLS" that is on the black baseball and basketball jerseys.

The College Vault program includes about a dozen logos including the interlocking UT and the "Star Vols."

I’m ok with Adidas if they’re willing to pay up. I feel like Nike has put the same template for everyone & just changed the colors. I know it’s hard to match oranges but with all the teams now using orange & Texas being in the SEC, they need to get it together. But I don’t want to see any alternative crap like this in our football or basketball uniforms!!

the thing that gives me pause here is earlier Deer Park said our pay day by Adidas was not going to be a "significant amount" over NIke. JMO if it's not a major pay day why make the change?

If Nike is willing to give Tennessee a top 10 deal, they will stay with Nike. Otherwise, they are taking the Adidas money that is significantly larger than almost every Nike deal. It’s not a personal preference for Ryan, Danny, or anyone else. It’s about an amount of money too significant to pass up, unless things changed with Nike in a hurry. I am merely pointing out that the point person for the negotiations is now leaving at a time where we are a week or two tops away from it needing to be resolved.

With the exception of three or four people who have been at Tennessee for more than 10 years, virtually every administrator working at UT presently has been a Nike person for their entire athletics career. No one is bringing feelings or nostalgia into this, it’s only about the money in perhaps the only facet where they can make it all about the money.

That is not what he said.

What did I miss?

Anyhow:

It looks pretty even to me. The schools making over $12,000,000 a year have been very competitive in most sports and not just football, which is why Tennessee stands to make a lot more than we were worth in 2017. I’m sure Adidas will make a great offer and I’ll be surprised if Nike does not make a similar counter offer as TN has been successful is all the revenue generating sports.
Miami signed their deal in 2015 and are about done with it, they will get more on the next one. With Adidas paying 16 million a year for Louisville how much do you think they are going to pay Tennessee, or at least I would expect them to pay more than Louisville! We might end up the with richest contract ever by a University.

Nike pays Oregon 8 million a year because Knight can make up any difference and he does. This way other schools can’t use Oregon contracts against Nike. Knight has given over a billion just to Oregon much of that to their Athletic department and is also their highest donor with NIL. He’s even got a trust setup ran by the old AD of Oregon for when his death takes place that will continue to give money to the Oregon athletic department.

Adidas is going to pay us quite a bit of money to switch. I would say up close to around what Nike is paying OSU. I’m actually excited about the switch. The classic orange and white uniforms will be really hard to screw up, and the black uniforms will still be fire. The thing all 3 of those uniforms have in common is that they’re simple concepts.

I want to note this about Louisville: They won a national championship in basketball and they had a Heisman winner in football, while being the only real football competition against Clemson in the ACC. For a couple years, they were about as exciting as it gets for a football/basketball school.

Tennessee is ahead of that now with baseball and women’s basketball on the up and having two Wooden award finalists in men’s basketball over the past 5 seasons. Not to mention our two top 10 finishes in football.

Even though Oregon is practically the face of Nike in college football, they haven’t been that great in other sports. We really have no equal in team sports as a whole (I’m sure Texas plans to take that claim as quickly as possible). That’s why I am optimistic about our value to Nike and Adidas. Our contract with Nike is expiring at a very opportune time.

Yes, but Louisville also doesn’t sell as much gear as TN does and again Adidas is trying to make a statement and what I’ve heard is us as a flagship for them. Also their deal was signed in 2017, they haven’t won a national title in any sport since 2013 and that was the basketball one they had to vacate lol. You ARE completely right that this is the best time for us to be going with a new contract because our sports department is the best in the country, if Nike doesn’t see that worth I hope Adidas does and makes us higher paid than Ohio State!

If you can find the kids that want that money in exchange for what is required of them. Less than half of the student athletes at Miami and Texas A&M have signed the Adidas influencer deals that are available to them.
Do you think that would be a problem with Nike or Jordan Brand schools?

Neither do I. And that ladies and gentlemen is why this has become such a lengthy discussion .

That's not what I said. I said the numbers reported were total value, not cash. The deal would certainly have to be much larger to make the move.

Depends on what the ask would be from Nike. I mean Nike does have some college players under NIL contract, I mean Williams from Bama has one such, just like some guys have Adidas contracts with their schools or even high school kids like Keys. Depends on what they are offered and what they have to do for that money.

Maybe, but there would be a much higher sign up rate if Nike or Jordan Brand had the same brand ambassador NIL deal that Adidas does.

Maybe, maybe not! Neither of us could have a clue about that because again it’s at the whims of 16-24 year olds. Maybe what Adidas asks is more than the usual brand placement during posts and lives on their various social media, could be they are just too lazy to do it or be saddled with the commitment. I know kids that are “brand ambassadors” for Rudis in wrestling! They ask for brand placement at big tourneys and whenever they do lives they have Rudis somewhere in their post or live. It’s not because they are the best equipment out there(I think ASICS or Nike have better boots) they just asked less than Adidas, ASICS and Nike did along with some more money.
