Sources: Tennessee restricted Butch Jones’ spending on coaching staff

Matt Canada supposedly told Butch he would come, they couldn’t get the terms right.

Edit: plenty of articles about this were Ed O confirms it but this is from rockytoptalk

If you believe Orgeron, the connection between Canada and Tennessee was real. This means absolutely nothing now, of course. Tennessee is set to roll with Larry Scott, but it’s an interesting revelation that Butch may have been considering going out of house to find his offensive coordinator.

I'm not buying it at all. Did anyone look at the 2016 USA Today Salary List that was linked in the article? It shows Tennessee has the eighth highest assistant coach salary pool in NCAA Football with $4.54 million (just for assistants). DeBord was making $505,000. Shoop was the 8th highest paid assistant coach in all of college football. We ended up with Scott because Butch watched someone who was going to run his terrible offense with no questions asked.

Funny thing is that I was thinking about this today. Given how screwed up the current search has been, I began to wonder if the reason we brought in so many subpar assistants over the offseason wasn't Butch Jones, but because the Athletic Department.

I've said a million times, people underestimate how much the AD impacts the football program. I think that's one reason why Les Miles struggled so much in his last years as well. The LSU AD is awful, as well. They tried to be cheap and controlling. It hurt Miles. Maybe Butch isn't as at-fault as we've thought. (Though, he still shouldn't have have gone 0-8 in conference play; that's ridiculous!)

Not just the AD, goes above that. This is why Bama kicks their ass every year and why UT Football has become irrelevant. There’s money for everything else except football which generates all the revenue.

haha butch didn't want to lose Scott because he was a solid recruiter for him and that's the only way he would stay. I call major BS.

Saban took the Alabama job with the agreement from the AD and athletic department that "he" would run the show with no limits. Until Tennessee does the same thing, we will continue to have mediocrity in our football program. If we want a top rate football program, money needs to be available to pay for a head coach and the assistants. The days of pinching pennies is over if we are going to compete with the likes of Saban.

What can you do when the powers are bent on cheaping out and killing a program with “bargain basement” hires?

Might as well forget any upgrades to Neyland... wont need it.

They probably have some bean counters saying increasing the staff budget won't produce returns to make it worthwhile.

You can't put a Ferrari on the road with a Volkswagen budget. Do they care enough to even try to learn?

Thanks for the article. Very interesting read. Do you think that if we ask Butch in a nice way, he would agree to come back? He is looking better than Coach Jr. from Knox Powell.

Man that article is a real eye opener. It explains alot about our current state of affairs. Pretty depressing really.

I think that's one of the main reasons people don't call this a great job. They have to work for azzclowns who know nothing about running a football program. They're all bean counters. No wonder we got stuck with Scott. This is absolutely the worst AD in college football.

We got stuck with Scott because bUTch went to LSU's O.C. and tried to bring him to U.T. He said NO, so to save face bUtch promoted Scott.
I would bet that Scott called the plays on 1st & 2nd downs but when the play really mattered, bUTch called the 3rd & 4th downs.
If you see an idiotic play, then you know that it is likely that bUTch called the play. For instance, on the 5 yard line against Florida, three conseq. pass plays were called and one ended in an int. That play has bUTch written all over it...........

This explains why coaches at lesser programs won't touch this job even for millions more than they're making. Tennessee is career suicide for an elite or up and coming coach.

We were second in football revenue a few years ago, not second in the sec. Second in the entire damn nation. Tn was valued as the second most valuable team a year or two ago by Forbes as well. This is absolutely the most piss poor administration in all of college sports supported by good and loyal fans. If you keep beating a loyal dog eventually they go crazy, piss all over the house, spray paint some graffiti, perhaps tweet some politicians, etc. There's only so damn much that people can take

Thats about enough to REALLY tick me off! Spend #8 (in the sec) money, dont expect championships!

We take in #2 money in the SEC behind Bama but could easily be #1. Then in turn put about 27% back into football and Bama puts 39% back in or maybe more.

You have to put up the money 1st then get the return. That's where UT fails. Most businesses run that way.
