Gainesville, FL. — Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow is expected to miss the 2009 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.
While Florida coach Urban Meyer said in his post-practice press conference that he had no update on the status of Tebow’s injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.
“It’s bad,” a team source said. “We’re going to have to play without him.”
Tebow was hurt as he stepped up in the pocket to make a throw to running back Jeff Demps. Gators cornerback Ahmad Black, who was on the ground, lunged forward and struck Tebow’s leg, which buckled as he released the ball.
Tebow was helped off the field and was later led down a staircase by Florida trainers, presumably to undergo tests.
Backup quarterback John Brantley now assumes the role of starter for the remainder of spring practice, although Meyer says that there will be an intense competition to see who will head into the fall as the starter.
The news comes as a serious blow to the Gators, as many have them favored to return to the BCS National Championship Game this upcoming season.
