Source inside says CBP is gone. (rumor)

the part where he asked others including parents to cover for him must not be too important.

People keep forgetting and/or overlooking that part of this. IMO they will get him harder on that than the lie about the pictures.

This doesn't appear to be a one time "oops got caught up in the moment" lie.

Recently at a fundraiser with several university presidents the discussion of pearl came up. Not in the context of what he did but what factors the NCAA is weighing. There is significant conference pressure to respect the second sanctions and not completely disregard them. The NCAA has been asking for asistance in policing universities from conferences. Now that they have the help they must respect it.

Politically the presidents from several conferences made it sound as if pearl may lose a scholarship and additional recruiting probations but no post season probation and no further suspension.

It was further denoted that kiffins departure from Tennessee was significant due to slives dislike for him. He may not have used his power to save Bruce and Tennessee otherwise.

Quit drinking the jay bilas kool aid and start attending more games. We need the revenue.

So to those who have a better understanding of the situation, what is the difference in the sanctions Tennessee would receive if Pearl is fired before the sanctions are handed down vs holding on to him as long as possible?

Everyone that says that BP needs to go are crazy. He made a mistake and he did what few people do. He admitted his mistake and apologized. He has never run from his error, he has answered the hard questions. In my opinion, he has represented himself the university and the team with class. Let without sin cast the first stone. For me it is not just about the success here with the program, but the fact that NO ONE has been able to make UT's basketball program relevant until this point. Those that think we can go and get a big time coach now is crazy. I will suffer through the NCAA punishment with this guy and watch him rise from the ashes. Some people on this message board really make me sick with their negativity and their posture of, I'm in the know. Get over yourself sit back and wait to see what the NCAA does.

This all seems like gross overkill to me. Good grief. The lying was bad, I agree--and stupid because the violation was so damn trivial! He shouldn't be suspended for a year--that's a joke. Without Pearl this program will fall back into the big black hole it was in for 20 years. He's got charisma, and that is a good thing and very hard to find.

Agree the lying was both bad and stupid. I think 1 year of probation, including banned from the tournement that year, and the loss of 2 - 3 scholarships over a 2 year period should be about right. However, when does the NCAA ever do anything right or rational.

No clue how you know this but it makes sense. Still, in dealing with the NCAA I don't expect it to happen.

Yeah, a more severe punishment than programs that commit academic scandals or get caught providing improper benefits to players seems to be about right.

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant remains suspended for rest of season - ESPN

"The NCAA said in a news release that Bryant's penalty actually constituted "relief" from even more severe penalties for breaking the agency's rules for ethical conduct and preferential treatment. Bryant could have been forced to miss as few as six games or be permanently ineligible.

The NCAA said mitigating factors presented in Oklahoma State's case resulted in a lighter penalty for Bryant. The decision was based on whether Bryant "actively and deliberately concealed, omitted or provided inaccurate or false information" to the NCAA and whether he had multiple chances to provide accurate information but did not do so.E-mail exchanges between an Oklahoma State compliance official and the NCAA indicate that there was concern that Bryant's meeting with Sanders was a way to connect him to an agent, something Sanders has denied. Bryant claimed in a letter of apology to the NCAA that he jogged briefly with Sanders at a Texas athletics center without breaking a sweat and then went to Sanders' house for dinner but did not eat
."

The difference between Pearl and Dez, is that Dez, given opportunity to fess up, never did. Pearl did, whether it's "window dressing" or not, AND he initiated the confession. Silly as it seems, that's just the kind of thing that matters to the NCAA.

additional recruiting probations [/U]but no post season probation and no further suspension.

This makes more sense than my last post about probation. Improper recruiting, and lying about it, is what got him into this mess in the first place. I do think we'll lose more than 1 scholarship though. Recruiting sanctions, depending on how severe they are, after the 1 year UT gave him is still a pretty hard blow.

There is no doubt that he has proven his worth and will find a spot if this one happens to go away.

See, this is the weird part of it that you have to wonder might be driving UT's odd contract-no-contract hanging onto him so far. The traditional way this goes down is: 1) We fire Pearl; 2) Pearl disappears for two or three years, either doing TV or coaching D2 again; 3) after a decent time has passed, Pearl can go get another so-so D1 job; 4) if he wins there, then he gets to be considered fully rehabilitated and he can coach almost anywhere. This is the usual way we punish and redeem our sports figures.

It sure seems to me like Hamilton is trying to step around that whole process and saying, "Look, we all know Pearl's going to work again. So why does it have to be at Auburn instead of here? If he's going to be fit to work somewhere, why do we have to go through the dog and pony show of firing him at Tennessee and starting over?"

All I was stating is that considering the many that think the NCAA drops a hammer on him, suspension plus additonal severe school sanctions, this would be better than the alternative. It appears the NCAA may try to make an example of him. I don't know that but a lot of folks think so. Personally, I think the loss of 1 - 2 scholarships, and an additional 6 - 12 months of some low to moderate recruiting sanctions actually fit the crime. It's just the NCAA is bipolar.

Barring anything else coming from the letter, Bruce will be the coach till the NCAA hands out the punishment. Hamilton made that point clear.

I'm hoping he has said that for support and will reconsider if the sanctions are going to be very severe.

Hamilton would be an idiot to wait until the punishment is handed down to make the decision. The decision should be made when they receive the letter from the NCAA. The writing should be on the wall at that point.

This is what makes it hard to believe since the letter hasn't arrived yet.

Nope. If he was going to fire him, he was going to do it back in September. We know what the letter will say. Most everyone does (unless something big we don't know about happened). Hamilton made his bed. Let's see how badly he'll have to lie in it.
