Source: Butch staying, raise pending

I think the raise is a most one, for what amounts to a modest improvement in wins and losses. Sounds about right, IMHO. Save the BIG raise for next year or 2016 when the Top 5 recruiting classes has a chance to really impact the fortunes of the team.

It's like the AD is made of money. As if you've not heard how empty our coffers are. How far down the ladder weve fallen on money made. Yeah, financial figures are rising, but they still have work to do. It's one thing to get a $350k raise. It's another to get the nearly $1 million raise many were saying was coming in order to fend off Michigan.

None of those people had any information whatsoever on that ~$1 million~ raise that existed in their minds.

Nobody wants him to fail. It's just ridiculous for him to get a raise because there are some people who actually think Michigan may try to hire him.

I don't look at it as a raise to keep other teams away. I was a big anti pay raise for CBJ in an earlier thread in the season. I've looked back on the season, and thought about what has been overcome this year. Injuries, youth, toughest schedule, etc, etc. I have to give credit where credit is due, CBJ. Recruiting is relentless, enthusiasm and energy is thru the roof, attendance is way up, and most importantly, hope from the fan base is way up. I look at this raise as a pat on the back for doing what most thought impossible. Now, go get us some championships.
Go VOLS!

I'm fine with raises for success.

I'm not fine with raises for the simple fact that we're trying to ward off another school from taking him.

Every team in the country, and including the NFL, knew not to even bother contacting Fulmer cause he wasn't going anywhere regardless of what type of pay increase they offered. I want that kind of loyalty from Butch.

Who's to say that Butch isn't that loyal to UT? He hasn't gone anywhere yet

We pretty much already knew this, but that's an interesting figure on the raise.

250K is a lot of money. And I think he was going to battle for his assistants as well. Butch knows keeping continuity is important to keep the train moving.

I agree. Fulmer was the only coach i ever knew at TN.

Since Fulmer, Butch has done more for UT than any other coach in my lifetime.

Really??? What has he done that's so great? His record is the same as dools.. Coach k got the number 1 player in the country sign n a top 10 class.. I know bb didnt work out...

So what am I missing??

I'm just interested on your point of view..

This is just one non-football facet of what he's done: a complete reversal of the academic side of our student athletes. Got our single-year APR from 909 to 962.

More on track, the recruits he's bringing in aren't causing havoc like most of Kiffin's did, for one.

His second to last year he gets 10 wins, goes to the SEC Championship, ends up winning the Outback Bowl and finishing 12th in the AP and coaches polls...

All this while recruiting Butch Jones type classes in very poor facilities at the time...

Yeah, he was terrible at the end....

So second to last years are the end now?

He is getting a raise because he deserves one. He is killing it in recruiting. 2 top 5 classes for a team that has won 11 games in 2 years. He should get a raise based off of that alone. The goal this year was to go to a bowl game. We played 23 freshman, replaced our entire OL and DL, played arguably the hardest schedule in the country, and were still going to a bowl game. There is progress all around. If we don't pay him - someone else will.

Tell me you're joking. Almost the entire 09 class turned out to be a huge black eye for UT. Most were either criminals who got kicked out or complete busts - Bryce Brown included.

How many ranked teams did Dooley beat in his tenure?

Fulmer is the Lloyd Carr of Tennessee: good, not great coach that won a national title and kept the program in national relevance before a late dropoff, but is bizarrely mentioned alongside his older, better predecessor (Schembechler).

Just like Cooper at Ohio State; winning programs but couldn't beat Michigan; Pelini had winning records but couldn't beat ranked teams.

Can anyone say cupcakes?
we'll need those outside the SEC games, but CBJ may be judged by those "ranked" wins as well.

He's brought a renewed passion to the University across all sports - "One Tennessee."

He has recruits viewing TN as a place they want to be again. Despite the thoughts of Volnation, Tn wasn't a dream destination for a lot of these recruits. Our "Tradition" means nothing to kids who were 3 years old the last time TN won a NC.

He has brought a renewed energy to the fanbase, selling out Neyland again, and doing it with a 3-5, 4-5 record at the time.

The list goes on and on. I never felt Dooley was leading TN in a positive direction. I feel Butch is. That's why I feel he's the best since Fulmer.

Are you attacking yourself?

Nah..I just had a another thought to go along with my first post. I quoted my first post for continuation. I was not attac...well on second thought, I suppose I was. It was the ******** I quoted in my first post. LOM member.

I already explained this to you once. The measure of success is not by being better than Derek Dooley. Not by any means at all.

Agree to an extent, but at this point thats about the most relevant thing to compare him to. It is improvement. Improvement is the goal.

It will be great fun to see the Vols when Jones gets his program reloaded. What the staff has done to clean up the Chernobyl mess they inherited is amazing. Butch is 2 and possibly 3 years ahead of where John Majors was in his quest to clean up a similar self-inflicted Volunteer disaster - not of his making.

This staff deserves rewards for the phenomenal recruiting and roster management underway.

Our standards are higher? I'm not saying CBJ does or doesn't "deserve" one, but to do anything because UK does is not the benchmark I want to be shooting for.
