If you want to try some excellent hometown craft roast coffe, check out Vertical Coffee Co in Cookeville TN. Can order online. Great stuff. In the medium roasts you get that flavor.
Roasts I've had, all excellent:
Happy Camper - medium roast
Ethiopian - medium roast (tried an etiopian medium roast craft brand from walmart when this ran out. not even close to same quality)
Black Jack (tainted with jack daniels then dark roasted)
Had a coffe drink there before the holidays called The Eddie. Espresso & House made Egg Nog. Mind blowing.
As far as store shelf roasted ripe berry craft stuff, Black Rifle is hard to beat. Aldi carries a german roasted coffee in Dark and Medium roast and is pretty decent. The medium roast is better. I like it a lot because it's 17 OZ for only $8.50.
I've always leaned toward the dark roasts (misplaced understandings of roasts, flavors, strength, etc), but have discovered the much better flavor sweetness profiles that come through on the medium roasts. And this is getting nit-picky, but for the dripper, Melitta filters have those micro holes in them and that makes a notcieable difference in the drip brew.
