thanks everyone. It means a lot. He had some tests this morning and some more bigger ones tomorrow that should give us a lot more information. I will keep you posted.

And obviously I'm biased, but he is a very good man Jaytrain.:good!:

It was very encouraging reading about others who have gone through this and survived. Sorry about your grandfathers though Cincy. Good news is you will see them again one day!

spent a large chunk of the afternoon at the hospital with another round of tests. The cancerous tumors are only in the left lung and in some of the nearby lymph nodes. Fortunately there is no indication that they have spread to any other organs. However, with some lymph nodes being affected, surgery to remove the lung is out of the question. Doctors feel that with his health he can fight through chemo and/or radiation treatments, so while nothing is concrete, that appears to be the next step.

I really want to thank everyone for their prayers again and continue praying for him in the coming weeks.

Great news everyone. I have no idea how these tests work, but all preliminary tests showed that it was definitely cancer. However after the lab(s) have scanned and gone over everything, it turns out it's not cancer. It's some sort of fungus on his lungs and antibiotics can take care of it. Unfortunately it can take up to two years to get rid of this fungus. However, antibiotics are FAR BETTER than having to deal with chemo or radiation.

If you ask me, it's just further proof that prayers really do work. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. I can't begin to describe how much it means to me!

Wow. That's incredible news Bill!

Awesome stuff...well, there's nothing all that awesome about fungus...but, relatively speaking, it beats the heck out of cancer.

Prayer is an amazing thing.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I would appreciate your prayers once again. My papaw wasn't getting better so they did further tests. Turns out that while he does have the fungus on the top of his lung, a different mass is on the bottom part of his lung that is indeed cancer. We have seen several different doctors over the past three weeks or so, and surgery is out the question because of how it's spread and the doctors don't want to try chemo, but they are going to use a "smart bomb" drug and radiation to hopefully fight this awful disease. He starts radiation Monday and will be receiving it 4-5 times a week along with the "smart bomb" drug Erbitux once a week, starting sometime next week.

If you could please continue praying for him it would great. The doctors really expect him to be able to handle this much better than chemo, but prayer never hurts. Thanks in advance.

As is probably obvious by the number of different sports forums I visit and respond to here on VN, I am a huge sports fan. My papaw is the man responsible for that. I couldn't begin to count the number of Tennessee Vols football games, Atlanta Braves baseball games or NASCAR races I have watched with this man. I remember several trips to the old Kingsport/Galaxy Speedway to watch races. I remember helping him teach his wiener dog how to play football. It would get the football by the laces and carry it into the end zone. I've had quite a few deaths that were close to me for a 27 year old, but if I lose my papaw it will probably be the toughest yet, because I never pictured this man as anything other than an absolute strength of power. I mean he still mows his own yard every week and goes to the turkey shoots every single weekend the weather allows him to.

Just please pray for him and keep him in your thoughts if you could. Thanks in advance.

One very sincere prayer sent from here.

I had guessed from your avatar you were much older than you are, I suppose much of your respect of tradition can be traced to your pawpaw.

Nowadays you don't seem to see as much of that attitude as you might desire in at least some young people.

A while back I went to visit my neighbor and he was home alone with a teen aged grand daughter. When I came in I asked her; "having fun yet??"

She replied she guessed so if you could call sitting on the couch with your grand daddy on a Saturday afternoon fun.

I replied; "honey, I would give up an arm if I could sit on the couch all afternoon with either one of my grand daddys today!"

Glad to hear things were not as bad as first thought. Now you and your Papaw go out and have a good time this weekend.....
