Ive heard alot of talk about how with the new jucos and other D-linemen coming in we'll have one of the best d-lines in the SEC again. And while i think it will happen. I have to think about early this year when we talked about JJ and Bryan Moore, and Brewer and lenneir. we thought our secondary would be stud but that just wasnt the case this year things happened that just didnt go our way. And i think that sums up the season. I just have to see our d-line be good before i'll believe it.

not trying to be a negavol just trying to state my opinion.

without malik anchoring the center, there will be a dropoff at the start of the season.

Which is why I think this D will be very good next year and has the potential to be elite in 2013. Unfortunately our O might peak next year with 2013 somewhat dependent on who returns.

On that side of the ball, the players we have coming in will get better with those coaches teaching them.

Wilcox gets it. He develops the talent at his disposal.

somehow we tend to annoint these players prior to them doing anything on an SEC field. Exactly why we end up disappointed a lot more than we end up excited after the fact.

If we were in the Big East, we would be excited all the time.

I agree we are making progress for sure. There are two ways to look at that progress.

One we are building a defensive roster that is significantly better today than we were yesterday.

Other way is to look at in terms of the competition.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Are we closing the gap?

How can one see we are not? Yes, other teams are getting better but there is a ceiling to how good players can be. If one believes we're getting players that are closer to that caliber, which imo it's clear we are, then it is only logical that we're closing the gap. A players physical abilities is not subject to infinite potential, realistically anyways.

I agree with what your saying but look at it this way. Where did you rate us this year as a DLine? Here's what I would say with very little thought:

1)LSU
2)Bama
3)Ga
4)USCe
5)Fl
6)Miss state
7)Ark
8)Tenn/Auburn

Closing the gap would mean jumping over schools next year. 6th is the best I could see us getting to and that's with the juco kids being very good. Who can we jump?

Our passing defense was ranked 12th in the nation. I think that anybody here would have gladly taken that even if JJ had been on the team and BB not been injured.
Is our Dline going to come out the gate and dominate the SEC?...No, but we will probably be pretty good as the season goes along. Our problems are and will continue to be on offense.

No question but the discussion here is how far from the top of the league is the DLine and when we will get there. I havnt seen anybody here claiming the defense is the root of the problem.

Well, i don't know other teams rosters well enough to know who is leaving, coming back, and up-coming talents, so I can't say who we'll jump. However, players leave, others step-up or don't, we had a great d-line in 98 after losing Little and had a weak d-line in 2002 after losing Henderson, Hayneswort, overstreet.

There's just no way to determine where we'll be next year in terms of on-field production but we'll be on par, or very close, talent-wise to most other teams in the league (even if it's not fully developed yet). At this point, I think that's all we can ask of our coaches and players because now we'll at least have a punchers chance.

I'd take our d-line over miss. st and arky btw.

I agree that our staff is doing a great job of building our roster back up especially on the Dline. It is at the top of the reasons I am very much against a change this year. It would almost certainly end our chances of getting the 3 amigos if a change was made. Without them we lose ground on even where we were this year. My point about the other rosters is that even if your pleased with the roster additions you have to temper that excitement when looking at where you fit with the rest of your competition. Hopefully we can say at the end of next year that we are in the top half of the league in this department. I could see us being ahead of miss state and arkansas but Auburn really worries me. I don't see us being ahead of the other 5.

Although I'm excited about the D-Line next year....still don't think there close to tops in SEC....behind Alabama, LSU, UGA, USCE, UF (don't think team will be good though). I don't know a lot about other SEC return D-Lines but ours will be middle of the pack at best.

No offense, if you knew a little more about football, you would realize it is a team, not individuals that are the most important factors. Just because you have a great defensive backfield, if the opponent has all day to find a receiver, they probably will find that target. We need a full team of quality players before one group can standout.

with this class we have added great pieces to our front 7. hopefully in the back part Injuries heal + major growth from the young guys= a good D

I really think Danny O'brien will have a big impact for us next year.. Him and Mo Couch are some big mother truckers

We have multiple guys who are ee who will be able to contribute. Mo couch and lanier and Moore were not ee.

It will make a difference.

We also can feel encouraged that perhaps like fairley at auburn couch will step up a lot his second year.

your right football is a team game. And if you knew a little more about Tennessee football you would that realize that this may have been the worst year in UT football history. our secondary was still bad i feel like they are getting better but when your weakness in the secondary is giving up big plays then your not going to be good.

first the word is compare. second you are correct about gap control but...the guys they are recruiting shows there is likely some amount of change coming, Malik turned a light on or something because in Sentimore I see his direct replacement and the others they are going ofter seem to fit the gap control along with the ability to attack as well.. Our D is going to be really good next season and come 2013 they should be scary if half these guys pan out.

Our defense will be outstanding when we can do not have to play LBS AS DEFENSIVE ENDS AND DES AS DEFENSIVE TACKLES.

Our defense will be much better once we get depth on the D-line so our secondary isn't having to make tackles on SEC RBs in the 2nd half. We'll have that depth next year.

Our secondary could be very good, but this year tells us nothing. How well do you expect them to play when they are running all over the field for 45 min a game? Heck even an NFL HOF secondary would get tired and look bad if they were running around for that much time in a game.
Our D-line wasn't getting pressure, which didn't help them at all and then when they finally got off the field it was for a VERY short time because our offense was horrible. So for all we know we have a secondary full of future NFL HOFers but until the D-Line improves and the offense can give them some rest and take some pressure off of them we will never know.

I hear all this nonsense about gap control but at this point no one outside of Malik has pulled a double team block. We play our DTs in a 0 shade and a 3 technique with our DEs in a 5 and 7 technique in our 4-3 as does LSU. The difference is they have the players to blow the A and C gap up. Gap control is for pussies unless you are playing a 3-4. We don't have the bad asses for that yet. And our LBs are so young they don't know how to read and react at this level. Why do you think the better teams can play smash mouth and run the ball down our throats when they please?

How do we look with Patterson now CB is gone?

I think UT was really banking on Patterson being an EE but now that hes not I believe some think hes fading. The last thing I read is Arky will be his last OV and I know Baylor is pushing hard as well. Hopefully he doesn't leave GA committing.
