Something To Think About

Brown had no resume at the time.

I'm not so sure that would have stopped Doug Dickey, but that's an entirely new debate that I'm not going to get into

And wasn't Brown at UNC at the time?

Really other than the USFL experience, Spurrier looked about the same.
Spurrier had just walked into Knoxville and beaten Tennessee with Duke. Brown had nothing but Appy State and some mediocre work as OU's offensive coordinator to fall back on.

I had completely forgotten that Duke was one of the teams that beat us. It's amazing that Majors survived. Those first two months of the 88 season are without a doubt as bad as I've ever seen it.

The LSU and Washington State games were as bad as any I've ever seen at Neyland.

what i remember most about majors is he NEVER shouldered the blame for a single loss. It was always pinned on assistant coaches. he could bring in good assisant coaches but could not get along with any of them. he was constantly telling the fanbase about that corner that was about to be turned. he gripped about his contract. he butted heads with coach cafego (refer to the used lady vols van as a gift from UT). i think fulmer is done, but to have john majors come around and throw fuel on the fire is pathetic. . .wait a min i smell alcohol, oh hey coach.

can't this guy ever just let it die? Either try to be remember as a very good player and a good coach for a time or just let it go and do something else majors, geez

I hate these threads. They remind me that had we fired Majors in '88 like we should have and hired Schnellenberger, Spurrier, or Erickson, we'd have a much larger trophy case and would have never had a pious snitch for a head coach.

with spurrier though...im not even sure one could guarantee that he wouldnt have jumped ship for as soon as the job opened up at Florida. Leaving one sec school to coach at his alma mater seems to me like something 90s spurrier would do :dunno:

I might be the only one on here that could care less about what Jonny Majors says. That dude was/is a drunk! And back in the day it was not hard to coach football it was just X's and O's now there is so much more speed, schemes, strength, and well designed formations that Majors would have not known his a$$ from a whole in the ground. So for him to sit in the Shadows and talk bad about a program that he used to be a part of, makes him even more of a Joke! He was a hateful coach and yeld at everyone. Yeah Fulmer had success while Majors was out and Majors got jealous and knew he was going to lose his job and then came back too early and lost 2-3 games in a row. If you were the AD and you saw that with Majors Health being the way it was would you not have let him go too???? Great Business Decision! So he being the drunk he was he got mad and started his 12 year I hate tennessee Rant. NOBODY CARES MAJORS!
We need a new coach for sure, the speed of the game and formations are changing again and Fulmer is not up to speed, neither is Chavis. They should join Cutcliff at Duke where the talent is not as good and the speed of the division is not as fast.
I would like to keep Clawsen I think he could be a great asset to our team. We got some good guys on the board for next year and some youth on our team that will be great next year as well. Bring some new blood in and lets change the face of the program.
GO VOLS!

The question about should Fulmer get any credit for the success of the 90's is open for debate.

But one thing is clear. Johnny left the cupboard in better condition for Fulmer than Fulmer will leave it for his successor.

Only to those who do not live in reality. You can dislike CPF all you want. You can bash him for the way the team is playing now and the past few years. But there is no denying the success the team had during the 90's under his coaching. I am old enough to remember how many UT fans were ready for CJM to go.

We probably would have hired Mack Brown and spent 10 years wondering why we couldn't get over the hump.

Mack Brown had 1-10 seasons in 1988 and 1989 but slowly making progress. It is hardly the pedigree to be hired at UT in 92.

Seriously. . . in 1980 in the rain, national televison, and charlie daniels playing at halftime. . not to mention my friend who was an grad student from alabama who REALLY DID think bear could walk on water sitting beside me IN neyland stadium.

We did NOT get a first down until the 3rd quarter and were shut out 27-0. . . Majors needs to shut the h*ll up.

Drove 18 hours each way from Burlington, VT for that starting on Friday after work and back home by the Sunday night. That was a blast.
