Something missing (shocking) from ESPN Rivalry Week article

Neither is A&M vs. LSU. And as others have said the last few years have not treated us well. Still a long standing in-state game we play during rivalry week. Would think that it would have been mentioned but given the responses in this thread it seems most folks agree with your point.
It is not and has never been a rivalry game. We just play our actual rivals earlier in the year. UK is more of a rival than Vandy and they aren't one in football either.

It may have not been to some of us but I guarantee you it is to Candy. Mason made several comments about how big this game is. I always considered it a rivalry game but not one that mattered.

I’ve never wanted to beat them as badly as I do this year in all honesty. It’s time to reassert ourselves as the Alpha in TN.

That was 70 years ago. I suppose it’s a rivalry now since Vandy has been beating the crap out of us recently. Well they even gave some of our better teams a battle. Effort means something.
Hey fool your time is over! It's back to the wilderness for you.your days are over.

So ESPN runs a pretty cool article about rivalry week. I kept scrolling looking for the detail around the Tennessee/Vandy rivalry to find they didn’t bother to include it....

Founding members of the SEC and first played in 1892 yet ESPN didn’t bother to include it. Just silly.

Vandy isn’t a rival for us. It’s an instate school that we’re forced to play every year due to scheduling. So actually, it was a compliment to Tennessee that ESPN didn’t list it as a rivalry game, because it isn’t.

how about you go ahead and ask the General if it matters from 50 years ago

How about some of you show some respect the history of the rivalry? Alabama doesnt even come close to owning us like Vanderbilt did from about the first 40 years of the series until Neyland was hired. Google it. Yeah they're a shadow of that in the past 90 years but they're still a rival.

Just because you see it as a rivalry does not mean everybody else should. Tennessee is 75-33-5 against Vandy. Not much of a rivalry. Now run along ,its past your bedtime

Just like Memphis is a rival. Any time we lose it’s the end of the world for us and they dance in the streets and on the field.

Unless you deal with a Vandy fan at work, church or as a neighbor no other Vol fan cares. Except the loss is embarrassing because they are Vanderbilt. Even at our worst it’s embarrassing because they are considered the low water mark.

How bad were you?
We were so bad we even lost to Vanderbilt.
That is bad.

Sure they have had some better than usual teams here and there, but we lost because of how bad we played, not how good they were.

A team you only want to beat so you don’t lose to them is a “beneath” not a rival. Nothing is gained by the win except the win. There’s no bragging about beating Vanderbilt, only humiliation for losing to them.

Where does your superior attitude come from? They have beaten us 5 out of the last 7 and have a 3 game win streak on us. Until we get back to the ways of many years ago they currently do own us. Sounds like a rivalry to me.

Blame those 5 wins on the university for hiring coaches from the dollar store. You get what you pay for. I dont even hold Pruitts loss on him. Those players just quit. But if you view it a rivalry that is fine. Do you view Mizzou a rivalry since they have a 5-3 record also?

We need a trophy or a nickname for it, hell the game against bama is nicknamed The Third Saturday of October, I know it's a mouth full but it used to mean something now it's just another week cause Vols hasn't been good in over 20 years really.

We didn’t care about it until recently. It’s not a rivalry. Shouldn’t be anyway....

Oh it definitely is a rivalry judging by the last several years and all the posts about the game this week. People definitely care.

I get the underlying statement you are sending, ESPN has be a long standing douche bag toward UT. As for Vandy, rivalry? well, they've won the last 3 and if we are not taking them seriously, regardless of record.........it could be 4. I am just as excited as anyone of the turnaround this team has shown, but it is not over, and stomping a mud hole into Candy would be very satisfying...........jmo

No because they aren't our oldest rival. Vanderbilt is. We have 127 years of history with Vandy.
