but you just don't understand. The outright conference title is the one thing that all teams have some control over with consistently excellent play.

Any one and done tournament involves a lot of luck, fortunate matchups etc. I understand that the tourney has become the ultimate measuring stick, but that is a flawed viewpoint, IMO. It makes for great TV and an outright champion, but those reg. season championships most often reflect the best teams from those conferences. In fact, the weakness of the tourney as arbiter of best is defeated with UGA as a 4-12 representative of the SEC.

Then why promote it? Why list the SEC regular season championships above the SEC tournament championships? Why brag about SEC East championships on the Gator media guide?

I am not minimizing your season in the slightest. I'm just putting it into perspective, which is to say that your regular season got you into the tournament with a high seed and you should be happy with that. But don't go saying that you cracked open a beer, unbottoned your pants, sat down and sighed and said "Life is good" when you won the regular season championship.


You know your first and only thought was whether you were in the running for a one seed.

you're best served to talk about fans only. I guarantee you that every coach in the land coaches hard toward their reg. season conference championship. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

I have no clue. I must personally have known 10,000 Gator fans in my life and I don't know anyone who goes around quoting or pointing to the media guide. I don't even know anyone who owns one.

I'm much more into football season in general, and I'm all orange in that regard.

March Madness is one of the most fun aspects of being a sports fan. And this year... looks awesome!

If you can get your hands on a copy of an old UF one, my guess is that it was pretty thin before 2000 if you guys even bothered to publish it for basketball.

I'll assure that there is more to the basketball world than the NCAA championship. Otherwise, all teams but one fail every year and that's just not the case. The average fan may be focused only on the tourney, but coaches and players do not share that viewpoint, except at a very select 4 or 5 schools.

The last time you called something totally irrelevant you were again proven absolutely wrong. That's how so.

I'm telling you 100% for sure that coaches are coaching toward regular season consistently high level play. That means conference titles, period.

Perhaps I should not have been so absolute. And I agree that there is a disconnect between the fans and the players and coaches on this subject such that the fans are focused almsot entirely on the NCAAs. But I maintain that most prgrams at this level are geared towards the tournament and that is a function of a lot of things, most notably $ and exposure.

My guess is that UF would not be in those 4 or 5 schools, correct?

I also think those 4 or 5 do care about winning their regular conference championships as well.

Niether UF or UT is anywhere near that list.

Those coaches 100% no doubt about it set as their first priority to win their conference regular season. It's the only true step toward the goal of winning it all. Can you imagine a coach saying let's focus on winning the conference championship and then a 6 game 1 and done tournament thereafter?

Pitino/KY, et al, were thought by many to have deliberately sandbagged the SEC tourney to rest their teams for the NCAA's

And in the years when such teams do win it all without winning the conference championship, there's still a feeling that a banner is missing... and a question as to why.

BPV, the Smith Center and the new museum is worth a visit if you're ever knocking around in Chapel Hill, eventhough I know you don't like the Heels.

I've been to the Smith Center several times. I'll visit the museum on the next trip. Presumably a basketball museum?
