Why Evan Berry has never been used at RB in his time at UT. Speed to burn, great vision, prototypical RB size, and is electric with the ball in his hands. I know he is rehabbing, but it baffles me that the most dynamic athlete on the roster only gets 1-2 touches per game since his arrival, especially with the shortened kickoff distance.

Maybe since we are a little thin there this Fall he will get a look if fully recovered.

Might have stated that we does not want to be a RB

It's completely different than returning a kick, because you get to see the field develop before the ball gets to you.

Not to mention a good 20 yard running start to get up to full speed!!

Would be STUNNED if they haven't at least Tried him at RB Though?!?!

Adjustment from HS QB to SEC RB was too difficult?

They did try him at RB, at least once. Didn't stick, not sure why.

Not exactly. Coming from experience returning kicks, you see the field one you have fielded the ball and then you have to quickly find your lane and open space to run through.

And once you get into the second level as a RB out of the backfield, it is a lot like returning kicks.

Just seems like a toss sweep out in space with a pulled guard blocking is a sure 7-10 yards but hey, what do I know.

You know I have wondered the same thing here.. I hope he gets some looks this Fall as well.

Seems like a bit different skillset. The utmost speed at RB is not required, but is of course accepted. While popping a big play is desired, it's very important to be able to turn a 1yd 3rd down into a 4yd. Can you turn a 1 yard loss into a 2 yd gain. I'm pretty confident that EB has the skill to turn a 4yd sweep into a 65yd TD, but I'm not confident in his shiftiness, ball security, and technique to succeed in the all-important game of moving the chains?

If I had to guess, then these would be the reasons. Like you said, he's been looked at before and apparently coaches didn't see what they were looking for. Still would be interesting to toss sweep or jet sweep him once in a while. Or, let him match up with an LB in space for a pass.

Note: Devin Hester never played RB at the top two levels of FB either. Berry is similar as a returner.

Then staff definitely need to find a way to get Evan more touches, he has been under used. Dude is a threat.

Great kick returner but I wouldn't describe him as "electric" with the ball in his hands. He has great vision and great speed but he's not shifty and he doesn't hit you.

That seems crazy to me but I guess I'll have to trust that it just didn't work out for whatever reason.

Me too. Figured he'd have worked out there well. I'm with you though Fade, hard to know as a fan that we have a player as explosive and talented and productive as Evan, who essentially never sees the field outside of 1-2 kick returns per game. Of course, there was Alvin Kamara .......

Because Butch Jones. Must be part of the "process".

Don't remember who, but one coach stated they were going to use Berry on offense last season some. Then he got injured and didn't play another game.

He could be utilized on some play action passes. I think if he were suddenly put in the game at RB with a 2 TE set or as a slot receiver in motion, you'd probably fool some of the defense, at least enough to find an open receiver. Also bonus points if put him in after he's slashed them on a kick return. I think he could be a real weapon but I'd worry about his durability out there taking licks as a RB combined with his duties as a KR. He takes some pretty hard licks as it is.

He played some RB in HS but he did not make the first team. Ask yourself this question "if a guy couldn't make first team RB in High School why do you think he would be an SEC level RB?"

Yep. DeBord discussed it as a change-of-pace option almost halfway into the season when he hadn't gotten to return a single kick. Gets one carry and picks up 7 yards then never saw the field again. 2 weeks later tears his ACL and he's out for the season.

SEVERELY under used during his time here. Kid deserves a shot.

As thin as we are at RB this year he should get 2-3 offensive touches a game and he should be lined up in centerfield on every 3rd and long in addition to returning kickoffs.
