Defense need to line up stop the run. Make em beat us throwing. Someone like Weathred can spy the qb with his speed. We need Mcneil to make good angles and help in run support.

Offense jus keep on keepin on

Let me first apologize to VN, as I feel like I've been starting a lot of threads lately. But it's late, I'm bored, and I decided to check some stats for Maty Mauk this year. What I found is..... interesting to say the least:

-As it stands right now, Mauk has only 200 more passing yards than Justin Worley. Note that Worley was injured over a month ago.

-He has thrown as many interceptions as Jeff Driskel.

-He has a lower completion percentage than Johnny McCrary from Vandy.

-Statistically, he's the worst SEC QB we have faced this year besides Driskel/Harris.
(Technically he has more passing yards than Mason from UGA, but Mason's metrics are dramatically better)

-He's a dual-threat, mobile QB who has rushed for 10 more yards than Josh Dobbs.... for the year.... seriously check the stats.

-He also rushes for 2 less yards per carry than Dobbs.

-He has 1 rushing TD on the year, Justin Worley has 3.

Here's the link to the stats if you want to see them for yourself.

2014 SEC College Football Individual Statistics Leaders for Passing - ESPN

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnndddd..... way to jinx it... now he puts up 600 yds of total offense on us:thud:

Nah I think Mizzou is just a more balanced team than we've faced most of the year to get their record. They don't have an incompetant defense that their offense must over compensate for in order to win is all I think.

It’s funny how some will say dial back the enthusiasm, this team we’re about to play, South Carolina, Kentucky, and now Missouri are improved teams capable of beating us like a drum the week before the game. Then the week after, after the Vols win, will follow with dial back the enthusiasm they have the worse offense/defense in the SEC.

I'll bet with a win Saturday, nobody will say dial it back in regards to Vandy...well nobody with a brain who has followed SEC football this season.

South Carolina actually, honestly does though. Like, literally, they're one of the worst defenses in the country.

They're just really good on offense.

That's never been about the other two or the vols. It's in their numbers.

Here are some thoughts on Mauk from a Mizzou fan.

He has struggled all year to throw the short and mid range ball accurately (except for A&M)

Don't get me wrong, he has been bad. However besides Sasser our receivers have been hurt and inconsistent and this has contributed to his struggles. White came back against A&M and Hunt was able to make his presence known for the first time in a few weeks.

Maty thinks he is Johnny Manziel, early on in the year he would roll out to his left and start scrambling 15 yards back just about every drive (which almost always ends in a sack, throw away, or interception). Coaches have gotten him to stop doing that as much, but you will see it at least a couple times Saturday.

Maty will make at least 3 incredibly dumb decisions, if you guys capitalize on those decisions you will win easily.

With all that said he has shown improvement since the Georgia game. Last week he played his best game of SEC play, but it was against A&M so its hard to tell how much of that was him improving and how much of that was terrible defense. Pinkel has turned Maty into a game manager over the last few weeks. If Tennessee stops the run and makes Maty throw he will make mistakes.

This is battered fan syndrome. We've been snakebit and we are now cautious to have any sort of swagger.

Just gotta get over that ****.

I can't say I disagree with this, you know and part of this is also I don't know how these recent events will really affect the team play. My hope is that it hasn't very much.

I especially agree with your last paragraph MizzouFan13. Forcing you to pass the ball and forcing Mauk to make reads and pass accuratly is going to be key. If you are successful on the run its going to be tougher for us. If we stop the run, your day gets a lot tougher.

Admittedly you might be able to say similar things about us except I believe Dobbs is a lot more dangerous than Mauk when running.

Hansborough (spelling) has an awesome fist step, he hits the hole quickly....we must stop the run, but that is true most of the time

If you guys are interested here's my take on our RBs

Hansbrough is very solid. Like you said he has a great first step, he is not going to run anyone over, but will surprise you and break some tackles. He sometimes tries to go east west to much. When he runs downhill between the tackles he is at his best.

Murphy also has a quick first step, he is more of a speed guy that we will use off tackle. He is shifty and is a dangerous kick returner. He is also occasionally used in the slot. If he gets the ball with space he is very dangerous.

Witter is a true freshman who will see a few carries. Pinkel has tried to get him involved in the passing game. He is similar to Murphy, he is very quick. He has not done much yet but has been seeing the field more lately and scored his first TD against A&M on a pretty decent run.

Those are some interesting stats. Sorry to be rude but I'm more interested in containing him and winning. They're a Top 20 team right now. On the outside looking in, the Vols have their work cut out for them. Tough schedule. Missing some key players. It's gonna be a challenge. I still remember the last Mizzou game I went to at home. We lost. Basically let James Franklin beat us with a broken leg. Just stood back there and picked us apart. I realize that was a different "era" but the sentiment remains the same. We're gonna have to play our best game to win. Just like last week I'm excited and nervous at the same time. So maybe that's a good thing...?

Most people don't know this but Mauk once ate 107 buffalo chicken wings in one hour and has won several pig in a blanket eating contests.
And now you know.

I almost feel like if I say anything hopeful about our chances or something negative about Mauk he is going to show up out of nowhere Saturday and look like a Heisman contender in our own stadium. This is the cautious, superstitious me though.

That's my philosophy, Coug. :ermm:

That's the best, most informative and thoughtful post I have ever seen on here...and that says a ton. Good work.

5 pages until an opposing fan (SEC/Power 5) showed up in a thread like this. That's just weird. Maybe they really do have sorry boards.

Thanks for solid info though MizzouFan

The board options for Mizzou fans are terrible. I subscribe to rivals so I mainly use that, but outside of boards behind paywalls the only other one that is actively used is tigerboard, which I refuse to use because it looks like it is from 1998.

That was the impression I had. Thanks for the information once again and not being a troll. We are spoiled here on VN
