Some Positive Numbers From Tonight

  • 76 - The completion percentage from Guarantano. Last year, he only surpassed that twice, once vs. Georgia (6/7), and against UK (18/23). He also threw the ball more tonight (25 attempts) than in any game he played in last year. I thought for a guy who is in a new system, and who we didn't have much confidence in from last year, he showed TREMENDOUS improvement tonight. His percentage last year was 61%.
  • 0 - The number of turnovers we committed tonight.
  • 1,416 - The number of yards Tim Jordan would have this season if he performed the same as he did tonight. Was VERY impressed with him. However, hoping that Chandler is fine and will be back.
  • 9 - The number of receivers who caught passes tonight. 4 of them averaged over 10 yards per receptions. The big play capability is there this year.
  • 10 - The number of tackles made by our leading tackler.....who was none other than Darrin Kirkland Jr.
  • 1 - Number of sacks allowed tonight by our offensive line.
  • 301 - Total offensive yards tonight. Only 5 games last year did we surpass that number (GT, Indy State, UMass, Florida, UK).
  • 34 - The number of sacks allowed by the offensive line last year (at least). They allowed one tonight. I didn't feel like WVU lived in our backfield.
  • 11 - The number of games we've got left.

For all of the positives on offense, they still only translated to 14 points, against a defense that is far from the most difficult that we will face this season.

Good list. I'm not unhappy with tonight's results, the execution could have been better but I really don't care because I figured we'd get shellacked. Grier is the real deal, he looked like the #1 pick tonight.

I just wish they had opened up the offense and let JG throw it more. To beat a team like them it will take a team throwing it 50 times per game.

I think the initial goal was to possess the ball and slow down the game. I won't disagree that maybe we should've gotten a little pass happy but I believe Coach Pruitt is shooting for the long game. I strong, tough offensive line. We have to remember this is still a roster that was a part of the most enept season ever. It would've been nice to play a near perfect game and pull the upset.

The reality is there are some positives from today. In addition to the above, the low number of penalties, the sideline game management and the relative health coming out of this game are positives (outside of the Chandler concussion).

UT doesn’t have the players to over power teams right now. Pruitt has some committed but these players were recruited to run a spread offense. Maybe in a few years UT can over power teams but not with this roster. They are going to have to throw it a lot to setup the run.

Would like to see more passing too. Our best playmakers are WR’s and we need to get it in their hands more. And it would help the run too, But the OL would have to step up and protect for it to happen. They were horrible that first Quarter, and nothing would of helped more than for us to come out strong, but they did improve after that so maybe they get better.

Like the positive spin on a game that was mostly a debacle; would only take issue with the 2 points above:

1. The big play capability may very well be there but with our longest gain in the passing game being just 22 yards on 25 throws, I'd say the jury's still out. We averaged just 9 yards per completion vs an avg of 11.6 yards last year.

2. A measly 301 yards ain't gonna cut it. Out of 129 FBS teams last year, almost half (64) averaged 400+ yards per game. Falling almost 100 yards short of that mark against WVU is not something we should feel good about it, IMO, especially after putting just 14 points on the scoreboard.

We were truly horrific on offense last year, ranking 124th nationally in total offense at 291 yards per game and an average of 301 would've earned us the same rank. While I still think this offense will end up being considerably more productive than last year's product, I saw scant evidence of that promise on Saturday.

That drive with 9 minutes left on the 2 yard line definitely should’ve equaled points. This game will go a long way for our freshman cb’s learning how to cover.

just like our offense has improved since last year, I am sure that their defense has improved...last year is last year.
